Bangalore: Tamil Saint-Poet Thiruvalluar's Statue Unveiled

TNN

Bangalore, Aug 9: The unveiling of Tamil saint-poet Thiruvalluar's statue ending an 18-year old standoff would pave the way for bonding of hearts between people of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said on Sunday.

"These are not just statues. These are symbols of bonding of hearts.  It is my dream that the people of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka share a peaceful relationship," he said after his Tamil Nadu counterpart M Karunanidhi unveiled the statue at a function.

Quoting a couplet from Tirukkural written by Tiruvalluvar, he said "ill feeling between neighbours will never be good to any society." The same sentiment is expressed in the writings of Sarvajna also, Yeddyurappa said.

"Nationality and patriotism should be part of our heritage.  We are Indians first, Kannadigas, Tamilians, Telugus, Malyalees, Hindi speaking people etc, later. Indianess is the binding force between all of us," he said.

Coming down on those opposing the installation of the statue, he said "I feel it is not appropriate to oppose the statue in the name of Kannada language. We should treat all the visionaries born in any state in the country as assets of our nation."

"Limiting such great personalities to one state or region and campaigning against such achievers is unbecoming of any citizen of the country," he said.

Both Sarvajna and Thiruvalluvar stood for humanity. "We should find solutions to our problems in their words," he said.

Exactly good move...We all are Indian first...but unfortunately I have foreseen some incidents like disrespecting either of the statue by so called regionalists will cause futher damage to the existing relation during any protest or some thing like that....I am worried because this what is happening all over India...just sake of statue they will burn our country's brotherhood ..

I am not ashamed to say that I am very critical of the BJP''s policies and attitudes in the state. For once I see Yeddi''s role a very positive one... uniting the Tamils and the Kannadigas. Whatever the ulterior motive be, I am glad that a step has been taken in bringing two neighbourin states together. I am sure politics plays a vita role in future vis-a-vis this move, but whatever it is, this symbolic move is worthy of a mention. A sincere kudos to Yeddi.

I am sure if he continues on these symbolistic moves, with sincerity, it will go a long way in strengthening the polity of the state. The most important step he definitely needs to take is to make sure he shows the impartiality of his government when it comes to relegious minority groups. Attacks on relegious places can be only attributed to a warped mind frame of a sadistic populace.

Every man and woman in Karnataka, irrespective of his caste and creed must feel protected by the Government that has been elected. Yeddi need not be a permanent feature of a single party. He needs to be a feature of good and impartial governance. I salute Yeddi, though I am the biggest critic of him.
