Mangalore, Aug 10: On his arrival at the city central railway station here at around 10.15 pm on Sunday August 9, the district Congress Committee greeted union railway minister of state E Ahamed with a memorandum, besides offering him garlands and bouquets. The memorandum was jointly handed over to him by Congress MLAs from the district, Ramanath Rai, U T Khader and Abhaychandra Jain.
The memorandum lists out demands like starting of day-train services to Bangalore, lack of railway facilities in the coastal belt, demand to extend the proposed Mumbai-Karwar super fast train to the city, starting of additional railway service on Konkan route to Mumbai etc. Former minister B A Moidin and Congress district president Ivan D'Souza were present on the occasion.
Ahamed told the delegation that the city central railway station would be upgraded as one of the five finest railway stations in the country and promised to discuss with railway minister Mamata Banerjee on the issues raised by the leaders and to do whatever is possible to mitigate the problems faced by the railway commuters from the twin-districts.
On Monday August 10, the Dakshina Kannada district committee of Bharatiya Janata Party handed over its memorandum to Ahamed on Monday August 10. Through the memorandum, the party has recorded its consternation at extending the night train from Bangalore to the city, to Kannur in Kerala. It has demanded for a day-train to Bangalore in view of the increasing number of passengers, and another night train to Bangalore via Hassan and Arasikere from the city. Besides demanding for the extension of the proposed Mumbai-Karwar train to the city, it has also called for the re-introduction of Janashatabdi Express that had been withdrawn about four years ago, and to build new level crossings at Padil and Mahakali Padpu in the city, because of the problems faced by the people. It has also asked the railway stations in and around the city to be brought under Mysore division, as Palghat division, under which they are functioning now, has not been catering to the needs of the railway commuters here.
