B S Yediyurappa government to remove Tipu Sultan lesson from school syllabus

Bengaluru, Oct 30 (IANS): The BJP government in Karnataka would remove the lesson on the 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan from school history books as he was a "tyrant" and prosecuted the Hindus, state Chief Minister B.S. Yedyiurappa said on Wednesday.

"As lessons on Tipu Sultan must not be in school text books, we will not allow them to continue," Yedyuirappa told reporters here.

Tipu (1750-1799) was the king of then Mysore state in southern India and died in the fourth Anglo-Mysore war in 1799 at Srirangapatna near Mysore after a series of victories in battles against the British rulers.

B S Yediyurappa

Mysore is about 150 km southwest of Bengaluru.

"We have already decided not to celebrate Tipu's birthday on November 10 as a state function, as he was a controversial ruler and indulged in forcible conversions, destruction of temples and harassment of the Hindus," the Chief Minister said at a meet-the-press event here.

The opposition Congress, however, opposed the move to ban Tipu's lesson in school history books and discontinuing Tipu Jayanti celebrations across the state.

"It is unfortunate that the BJP government has decided to remove the Tipu lesson and stop celebrating Tipu's birthday as part of its ideological agenda for vote bank politics though he was the first freedom fighter who fought the British to remain independent," Siddaramaiah told reports here.

State Education Minister Suresh Kumar has directed the Karnataka text book society managing director to study an appeal by BJP's Madikeri assembly segment legislator Appachu Ranjan for removing the lesson on Tipu from history books in schools.

"Tipu has been portrayed as a freedom fighter in the school text books in Kannada and English with no mention that he was a tyrant and forced Hindus to embrace Islam," Ranjan said in a letter to Kumar.

After reading all the comments, my conclusions are
People supporting Tipu are all belong to a particular community masquerading as Hindus or Christians by using Hindu/Christian names. There is no love lost between Hindu/Christians towards genocidal ruler Tipu who massacred people belonging to both the communities.
The legacy left bu Tipu is fanaticism/Terrorism that is being followed by his descendants. The extreme poverty may be the factor restraining them practicing the sick ideology.
All said, yeduveerappas move to correct the history should bt hailed. Jai BJP

I wonder how can one forcibly convert another person, do this dotard knows whether that is even possible.

If they have been forcibly converted, all of them would have reverted after his death. He did not even live long enough by the way.

The conversion happened in northern Kerala willingly by people, all because Tipu beat the Namboodirs who enslaved people working in their farm lands for generations and had the rule that no other expect them can own land.

They were persecuted to the worst form. Time has changed so much that the new generation does not get their knowledge only from text books. The more the government try to hide the more people will be curious to learn.

History is history whether good or bad. Who are we to erase it? No sir, let`s not forget he was a ruler. There is no justification for deleting the lesson from the books. We know about Tippu Sultan because history of Mysore and its rulers was part of syllabus. Why should the coming generation be deprived of learning history. There may be reasons for taking this step. Let the CM consult historians and weigh his decision before taking the action.

What a hypocrite yeddy is. When he jumped guns and went on form KJP, he was the one who got dressed in tipu dress and now back in his den, he suddenly is awake.

I am not aware of what Tipu did and so is majority of the guys crying foul over Tipu celebration. Our country doesnt move forward, because of caste politics, religious politics, constant changes in history as per a particular political party's thought process, etc. These parties are constantly in the process of spreading hatred amongst us and brain washing.

Dear yeddy, please remember one thing. No one can ever hide the truth. We arent living in the pre historic age. There is record for everything. And one key advice. Dont wrong the people. Everything has to come one full circle.

Removing Tipu’s name from textbooks will be injustice to history. As I had said earlier I again stress that unbiased facts about Tipu need to be mentioned in our history books. Withholding facts had made Tipu a controversial figure in history. Whether rulers of the past were benevolent or tyrants, we don’t find such controversies ranging from Ashoka to Aurangzeb. Controversies arise when truth is hidden or distorted.

History cannot be wiped out or hidden. There is no doubt that Tippu was a great ruler. History books doesnt glorify tippu. The only state facts about him.

The atrocities he has committed on chirstians, hindus etc have not been mentioned in the history books.

Instead of removing the entire chapter on him it is wise to state facts about him.

Well done Yediruppa Sir . People have not done mistake voting you . Your Govt has indeed done very good job . During Sidharamaiha rule under Congress Govt they deliberately organized tippu Jayanthi to please one community . A Controversial Tippu Jayanthi which Disturbed the peace in Karnataka which neither Hindus nor Christian's were for that , both the community were against that due to the ruthless attack by Tippu on both the religions . But Congress wanted to organise the Jayanthi to impress one community . Actually they are not supposed to celebrate any Jayanthi in their community but Sidharamaiha organized this only to impress and get votes from minorities and as arrogance that any cost we will organize . As the result he lost badly in chamundeshwari with 35000 votes and he won in margin less than 2000 votes . Here in Mangalore also all the Congress leaders supported Tippu Jayanthi knowing reality . That's y They lost in election last time with hight margin .Power of Hindutva .Jai BJP .

We should also not read about the East India Company in our history syllabus as the British also looted the country and killed people. Our own kings supported them to rule the country by divide and rule. So that way we should not study our own local king's rule. Indira Gandhi also put emergency and she did operation Bluestar and killed Sikhs. So Indira Gandhi also to be banned from history books
