Now, Hindu Outfit wants Goa Museum to Remove Husain Painting

PANAJI, Aug 11 (IANS): Goa State Museum officials will meet later this week to decide whether artist M F Husain's painting titled "Standing Buddha" should continue to be displayed, after a right-wing Hindu group sought its removal.

Goa Museum director Radha Bhave said that she would be meeting higher officials later this week to decide on whether to continue the display of the oil painting which shows a white bull against a vividly coloured backdrop.

"I will need time to decide on the matter, I will have to take my seniors into confidence. We will meet and take a decision collectively," Bhave told reporters Tuesday.

Earlier Tuesday, in a written representation to the museum authorities, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) convenor Jayesh Thali, while admitting that he had no basic objection to this particular painting, said the outfit was simultaneously working at preventing Husain's art from being displayed publicly throughout India.

"He (Husain) has always hurt the religious feelings and national sentiments of millions of Hindus and Indians earlier. His paintings of Hindu deities and the Bharat Mata in the nude were thoroughly obscene and in bad taste," Thali said, adding that the HJS would be forced to agitate if the painting was not pulled out of public display.

The "Standing Buddha" is one of the several paintings on display at the Panaji based museum, along with other art works by famous artists such as F N Souza, S H Raza and others.

"The painting is undated. It was sourced from Institute Menezes Braganza Trust in Panaji," Bhave added.

MF Hussain has won more accolades for his paintings, but these don’t give him the liberty to insult or mock someone’s religious feelings or sentiments. Nudity has to be avoided, it is not art it is just a mentality of insane person.

There is difference between carvings in ancient temples, with the paintings of Mr.Hussain. Carvings are found to be more devotional and doesn''t show unethical relationsip. Whereas, Mr.Hussain has portraited it in an unethical way as Hanuman with Seetha in nude, etc. It is truely wrong to portrait other religion figures in wrong way, & if he has any justification, he can come openely & justify it.  The best solution is ask him keep his paintings in his own gallery.

M.F Hussain is good artist no doubt on that, but he has done damage to other religion by painting nude portraits of goddess which is unacceptable, he has done many times in past. We all have witnessed that some foreign artist has portrayed prophet and consequenceis, so Mr Hussain should refrain this kind of paintings which disturbs the harmony and authority should not allow exhibit the same.

All over the world that particular community people boycotted danish products and in many country there were violent protests damaging other peoples property. I agree that MF Hussain is a great artist and I also agree that all artists need freedom to express their imaginations. Does it mean that they can paint and exhibit any of their wildest imaginations without any concern for the public sentiments? Time and again MF Hussain has hurt the sentiments of the people by painting nude pictures of goddesses. In a way he has tried to glorify nudity too. I feel even the imaginations of artists should be within the boundary of ethics and morality. This time Hindu Jagaran Vedike has gone the civilian way of requesting concerned authorities to remove the painting. I appreciate their action, if authorities do not heed to their request , they should put up a strong case in the court instead of taking law into their hands

Freedom of expression and freedom of speech doest not mean that one can act according to his whim and fancies. He should exercise this right within some boundaries and morale and within some parameters. One cant offend others feelings. This rule applies to each and every citizen of India and is not restricted to painters alone. If this art of FM Hussain is really offending then its not worth for exhibition. But if removal is for revenge then its not good.

M F Hussains paintings should not be displayed all over India. He has drawn nude pictures of gods, Godesses and more over he had drawn such similar picture of Bharath matha as well. This shows what respect he has towards the country and other religion. point out any other artist who has drawn nude pictures of other religion gods and his own country. if his pictures are allowed to be displayed in India, this clearly shows that we are supporting his criminal acts. so we shouldnt allow such type of paintins to be displayed in our country.

More than an painting, Mr. M F Hussain, gives image in his painting of sex & romance of gods. Liberty is must for an artist, but at same time it shouldn''t hurt the sentiments of other people. Definitely, he can perform better within moral limit, but most of time has crossed the limits.

If he was  true to his work, he could have come openly in India seeking protection of police with consesus of court, instead he is doing his work elsewhere abroad, & showing it in India. Better all museums avoid his paintings, till all early cases against him are solved.

It is inappropriate to term Hindu Jagrithi Samithi as Hindu Outfits. It has made it clear that it is opposing the display & not his paintings. Morever, why Mr.Hussain has been painting the nude of other religion gods & showing his own with full dress. It is high time that irrespective of religion, all should condemn his nature of provoking hatredness in the name of art.
