Mangaluru: Double whammy for passengers - Lesser flights to Mumbai, higher fares

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 4: After several development works were undertaken at the international airport here, the number of passengers using the airport has been increasing year after year. But the passengers are aggrieved by the fact that the number of flights to Mumbai from here has become less, but fare has gone up steeply.

The passengers are dithering from using this facility. As a result, in course of time, the airport development might take a hit.

Till last year, Air India used to operate one flight to Mumbai from Mangaluru, while Jet Airways had three flights. IndiGo operated two flights, and SpiceJet one. Seven flights were therefore operated daily to Mumbai, and the average fare charged then was between Rs 5,000 to 6,000.

Air India has since stopped direct flights to Mumbai. Instead, it is operating a flight to Mumbai via Coimbatore. IndiGo operates two flights and SpiceJet one. The fare has gone up to Rs 15,000 to 16,000, which is burdensome for average passengers. That too during peak times and festival seasons, tickets are priced beyond reach, and that too it becomes hard to get tickets because of less number of flights. Many a time, the passengers are forced to opt for a detour to reach Mumbai, which is not only inconvenient but also costly.

Particularly, the Air India flight to Mumbai via Coimbatore not only wastes time of passengers but also results in less passengers for the flight. In the past, this flight used to be fully occupied but now only a portion of passengers are taking this flight. If there are direct flights to Mumbai, more passengers will opt for travel by air. One hopes that the flight operators will take steps to introduce direct flights to Mumbai.

Ever since the Mangalore Internation Airport contract won by the Adani group it has brought bad omen to the city.
If Mangalore was in Kerala, the entire bunch have travelers must have approached the relevant authority and asked for the travel cost reduction.
In reality, the Managaloreans opting for flight from this destination are paying as equal to the Middle East travel.

I have realized that if one has enough time and do not want to spend more money. then train travel is the best. Less than bus and of course flying. It is comfortable also.

In the past the rush to Mumbai was due to passengers flying abroad from Mumbai. Now that flights to middle east is available from Mangalore, less number of flights probably makes sense. Airlines typically charge based on demand and supply and so also the number of trips.

However, the ticket prices of the articles is misleading. If you take 6E-295 from Mangalore on 12 Dec and return on 15 Dec by SG-6249, the return fare is about Rs. 7500. This is a random schedule I chose on makemytrip.com.

There are a number of flights from Bangalore - Mumbai and if you book in advance, you can get fares of about 5500 as return ticket.

    Dear Ronald D, Udupi,
You are right that price from Mangalore is higher than from Kannur.
I am extremely worried as it has a larger impact on the economy of Mangalore if true viz., that dependence of Mangalore airport was more for people from the neighbouring state. No airline will deliberately charge a fare unless it has to do with the revenue.
The larger impact that I am worried is, people staying in the 100 Kms radius around Mangalore are dependent on Mangalore for not just airport, but port, health services and education. The economies of scale seen today in Mangalore may be in for a rude shock as alternate centres become available.
A mid-long term planning in terms of business, infrastructure and areas of businesses is the need of the hour. Airport utilization is a very good example/motivation.

i am regular traveler from mangalore airport. after Adani takeover our airport prices from mangalore hav increased very high.

when feku privatized mangalore airport no one opposed from our coastal dist.
had it been privatized during congress time BJP chaddi gang would hav done nanga naach (dance without chaddi) on road.

this is what happens when you become bhakts of certain political party.

this feku will sell everything in mangalore to Gujrati marwadis.
