Shah Rukh Detained in US Airport Over 'Khan' Name

New York/New Delhi, Aug 15 (IANS) Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan was Saturday questioned for two hours at the Newark airport in the US over his surname and was freed only after Indian diplomats intervened.

The Indian government and entertainment industry reacted furiously after the 43-year-old actor, named by Newsweek last year as one of the world's 50 most powerful men, revealed how he was detained and stopped from even using his mobile telephone.

Speaking to CNN-IBN channel on telephone from the US, Shah Rukh appeared to shrug off the embarrassing episode saying he had suffered similar treatment previously too.

The incident happened as the hugely popular actor, whose fans number millions in India and abroad, was on his way to Chicago to attend an event related to India's Independence Day.

Other Bollywood stars like Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan too are set to attend the function.

"They checked me because I was an Asian," the actor said. "They wanted to know why I came to the US and where I am staying."

Shah Rukh's manager Niloufer Qureshi earlier told IANS over telephone from Mumbai: "He was detained because his surname is Khan. He was kept until officials from the Indian embassy intervened."

Asked if he got into trouble because of his giveaway Muslim name, Shah Rukh, who is married to a Hindu, said: "Certain countries have issues with my name." He quickly added: "I am very proud of my name."

Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni denounced Shah Rukh's detention over religious grounds.

"I don't think that this manner of detaining (in the name of religion) is justified. But in the US, several examples have surfaced where frisking takes place more than required," she told reporters in New Delhi. "There should be a tit for tat response."

Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar, a close friend of Shah Rukh, said in Mumbai: "I am shocked and upset. I am feeling terrible."

Shah Rukh admitted that he became "greatly worried" as the American officials piled him with questions -- mainly about his travel to the US.

The actor said a large number of Indians, including organisers of the Chicago event, were waiting outside at the airport to receive him. Indian diplomats came to his rescue when they heard about his plight.

He said it was ironic that the incident happened on the eve of Aug 15 -- when freedom is celebrated by Indians.

"I personally feel it is over and done," he said, sounding conciliatory. Asked if he felt like reacting in a similar way, he replied: "If they want I can frisk Angelina Jolie when she is here (India)."

Undoubtedly one of Bollywood's biggest and most highly paid stars, Shah Rukh has acted in nearly 70 films in a career spanning 17 years.

Security checking at airports for security reasons under prevailing condition is good and should be cooperated with but doing in a disproportionate magnitude is deplorable and condemnable. If USA and other western countries resort to such practices, why do we not adopt uniform and standard operating procedure (SOP) for such visits? It, in a way, betrays our inferiority complex and colonial vestiges. After all, why Shahrukh Khan did not return back instantly in protest against what he called, humiliating treatment meted to him?

He should have told the organisers after that it is due to this, what he called, unprofessional and inhuman attitude and behaviour of the American officials at airport, he decided to return back and not do perform before the audience. He did not do that and perhaps he would go again to US, if heavy amount is paid for any programme. It is time, we ponder in a more professional and non emotional way. We can adopt similar professional approach towards them.

It, however, does not mean that we humiliate or hurt them but we can make them understand that look, here is this country which can not tolerate humiliation of its citizens. It seems that our disrespect and utter neglect to our ideals and our heritage has allowed the situation to take such ugly shape, after all what explains that ‘Raj Ghat’ the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi, our Bapu, was allowed to be inspected by American dogs to make it sanitised for the US President to pay homage. We must learn to respect ourselves before seeking respect from others. Mind it, there is difference between hospitality and flattery.

Dear Thomas Pascal, I agree that Sharukh Khan should be treated like an ordinary person but for justifying your argument please do not show Gulf countries in a poor light. Just because you had a bad experience in SA, do not generalize. I have been living here in UAE for more than 10 years but never experienced any problem in the emigration or customs.

These days in UAE it doesn''t take even 2 minutes in the emigration counters if you have proper Visa and there is no queue. If you have egate card you need not even visit the emigration counter. In the customs, if you don''t have any objectionable item, it is a free walk through. So please don''t misguide the people.

It is media which is blowing the matter infact SRK did mention that this was happened before, in the past the officials at US immigration asked George Fernandes to remove his pants. This happened some other country''s minister and they did the same thing when US official visited that country.

Not a big deal. For SRK he does not need cheap publicity because he gets more than enough publicity as such these stars hide from publicity. At this stage it US needs cheap publicity because they are exposed world wide waging war on poor countries and struggling to get away.

The problem with the Indians in USA is that, they feel great when such incidents take place in USA.( see the comments by Valson)They feel like the country is more safe and all are treated equal. It is utter nonsense if they think Khan was frisked because they treat him as simple vistor. The reason is that, the USA officials are Zero about the general knowledge and the outside world.

They do not know how big is India and its people.I have my own experience in USA how they treat all foreigners,Only because they have no opportunity to travel and no opportunity to see the world.I have seen that the people dont know how the rice, wheat, coconot is grown and how can you expect them to know India.

Why is it hue and cry when Shahrukh Khan was detained for sometime at the US airport? In the eyes of security everyone is equal. Khan could be a big star in India but why should the US Security Department ignore the warning sign that alerted them to check the passenger? The officer just did what he was supposed to do. If he had ignored the warning, he could have lost his job. Yes many Muslims are experiencing in the US what Shahrukh Khan experienced especially after September 11 incident.

Today the US and India are the two countries which are facing terrorism more than any other countries and if the authorities of these countries not strict in their checking, they could face another 9/11 or 26/11. In the process someone, who is nothing to do with terrorism, would become a victim, like Khan. Even our ex- President Dr. Abdul Kalam had this type of experience, who did not make it a big issue. George Fernandes too claims that he was striped by the US authorities upon his arrival in the U.S. The US authorities later clarified the issue saying that Shahrukh Khan was cleared in 66 minutes, and not two hours as the superstar Khan claimed.

You ask those Indians going to the Mid-East Countries how long they have to wait at the Customs and immigration. It would be not less than three hours. I will give my experience which happened some years ago. I was one of the first passengers who came out of the plane as soon as it landed in Riyadh. I was glad to think that I could be out of the airport soon.

However I was wrong. A custom officer who checked my baggage, found a diskette in my handbag which he kept aside and asked me to wait. When he did not care to check the diskette even after more than one hour, I asked the officer if he could check the diskette so that I could leave the airport. He said no and instructed me to wait. After two hours when I asked the officer if I could come next day as I had severe headache, he said lah lah lah.......blah blah blah (no, no, no....etc.).

Finally when he is done with all the passengers on the queue, he arranged to check the diskette and other items he collected from other passengers such as video tapes, etc. and when they found nothing in the diskette, they allowed me to go which was after more than 4 hours. The diskette was containing some personal document which I could have sent thru’ email had I known that I would be having nightmare at the airport.

There was one more incident that I know. A colleague of mine whose name is Israel, had a tough time with the immigration authority at the Riyadh Airport, apparently because Israel is the name of their enemy country. So it is happening everywhere, even in India. We common people experience this type of things on daily basis but who cares? We are not Khans or some celebrities.

Shahrukh and many other film stars were going to New York to celebrate Independence day. Why can''t they do the same thing in the country they got independence in, rather than go to another country for that. Is it for the love of the country or to earn some more money?. Its only in a country like india so much media coverage is given to a filmstar for just a little delay in immigration check, which is according to the countries rules.

The news channels had only this news to broadcast when independence was celebrated in the whole country with so much genuine patriotism by the citizens. For Shahrukh it is "little humiliation suffered in America, will give biggest superhit movie "my name is Khan" from the same country. I have lived in US for a long time and have passed the customs so many times. All I can say is the Dept of Homeland Security has a job of protecting their country, they need to protect their Buildings, Airplanes. They have every right to question Khan or Kalam or My Tom Dick & Harry.

Many times they detain the US Citizens itself, verify their passports are not fake, they ask all kinds of questions. Mr KHAN, if you feel embarassed, please don''t step into US again. You want all the money you get from movies shot in US, concerts in US, if you feel embarassed at being treated like a commoner, you are a just a commoner coming to USA for any purpose and the Police there have every right to cross examine you and send you back.

They may even think you are going to become an illegal immigrant like many other Indians. They may think you stole someone else''s passport and used his visa. Let them do the job. You can tell your fans in India how good the US Customs is in protecting their country and ask people of India to demand the same from our government so that terrorists cant sneak through fishing boats or Nepal Border.

Even Al Gore had to pass the screening and Hollywood actors do it frequently without a incident being reported. All that is done is for the safety of themselves and to us. Nowadays the world is not safe and we shouldnt make a issue out of it.

All that has happened is good and i hope now Sharukh knows what does it mean to be an ordinary citizen. Thank''s.

I dont blame U S authorities. infact we must learn a lesson from them that all human beings are equal and nobody is above the law.for me the person who gives himself for the country is a hero or a superstar. these guys who always run after money and cheap publicity should not be spared anywhere. he does not do anything for the country.

He is busy in making money for himself. how much charity he does for the poor.  In our own country we treat poor so badly and humiliate them everyday life.now atleast these people know what humiliation

Before we comment on the security policies of the US we must know a few facts Sharukh was spotted with Dawood at a cricket match a few years ago. He owns an IPL team and all the money is not white? What happens to the black money? Nobody knows. Secondly, all celebrities cannot be exempted. We all know why Sanjay Dutt is charged for? Its hard to imagine even a top actress like Priyanka Chopra made a comment asking the cops in the US to get real? Do we have to think they watch bollywood movies or they do not know what Sharukhs connections are?

And all those who are saying all are equal human beings, why is that when some VIP comes from US to India will be getting VIP treatment at the airport and you make them sit on your head??

So what ? what is the big deal in it ? Every country has their own policies. US is doing it that’s why after 26/11 we never heard of any bomb blasts or any kind of attack in US except some petty shootouts in schools. But, in India…everyday here or there, terrorists, blasts, mavos attack……… Why are we not adopting the same policies as US. Strip everyone except nationals.

I have traveled western countries many times. The treatment for the VIPs and ordinary citizen is same. Take an example of any Hollywood actor or singers, you may come across the news that the arrest of Hollywood actors/singers. There is no VIPs in the country, everyone is equal. All the jobs are respected. The Celb/VIP''s can not use the police for their security. They have to heir the private security. In our country can you emagine ???

When even Ex. President Dr. Kalaam was searched, then what is SRK compared to Dr. Kalaam? What is the big deal and why you are making it such a big news. Majority of Muslims must realise that world looks at them with suspicion due to nefarious activities of a small section of Muslims. This section is a cancer of muslim society and all right minded muslims must fight this cancer themselves to redeem their society.

What’s happening in US? Barak Husain Obama also detained for his name? Should we do it when he comes to India? They (US) did that to Kamal Hassan some time before. Poor geographical knowledge and rude nation. Are we not one of them we are too treated by name?
