Mangalore, Aug 12: In an incident depicting growing abuse of domestic servants and minors in the recent times in an urbane set up, a girl employed reportedly as a child labourer was admitted at neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU) of a private hospital here on Wednesday August 26 night. She was admitted here after being seriously injured trying to escape from the unwilling slavery jumping from the fourth floor of an apartment at Attavar.

Abdul Salam with police officer

The girl has been identified as Ayesha, aged about 13 years, from Sirsi in Uttara Kannada district and admitted to the hospital by her employer. In a frustrated bid to escape from the house where she was employed, she jumped through the window of the room where she was locked in when none of the members of the house were around, informed a local resident explaining about the incident. She has suffered pelvic bone dislocation.

The employer identified as Abdul Salam originally from Kerala now settled at Casa Grande apartment Flat No 406, one of the posh dwellings of the city, is a businessman and hotelier with establishments in Mumbai, Karnataka and Kerala. One of Salam’s relatives informed that Salam had settled in Mangalore for the sake of the education of his children. The girl was hired for work through an agent and the girl’s mother left her at the apartment. But it seemed that the girl was not interested to work.

Children Welfare Committee (CWC) members visited the hospital and have registered a suo moto case under JJ Act 27/3. Mangalore South police, who visited the hospital, said that the girl was hired for labour about eight days ago and that the legal action will be taken by the district labour officer.

I agree with Anusha, there are some parents who give birth only to raise money from their children. the worst is those employ their children to beg on streets and traffic signals. Please if you want to help the children do not give them money but food, clothing, shelter and education. PLEASE START IT FROM TODAY AND ALSO SPREAD THE INFORMATION.

Arrest the  owner on two grounds, first employing a child to do household chores under labour and secondly on the grounds of cruelty and forcing the small girl to injure her body and endangering her life in the escape process.

I don''t really think he is the only man to blame. In our everyday lives, we all come across a hundred children serving us at Bhel puri counters, tea stalls, small shops etc. Not one of us including me raise a finger against child labour. It''s a fight for survival and they have no option. For those who protest against child labour, kindly also provide the alternative means of survival to the child and it''s family. If Abu Salam is to be blamed, the child''s parents should be subject to punishment ahead of him cause they are more responsible for it''s well-being than anyone else.

It is an unfortunate incident and Government and society should take an initiative to eradicate  child labour issues. The root cause of the problem is poverty, and under aged children from the poor family has been exploited by the people who badly need servants. Many parents from poor families force their minor kids to work as domestic servants. Recent joint session of Parliament the President of India announced that India will soon pass a Food Security Act, which will ensure at least 25kg of wheat at Rs. 3 per kg to every household below the poverty line. How many poor kids should suffer till this bill get passsed.

In the first place I would compliment Daijiworld to bringing this instance to the knowledge of the public. This is a crime which the like minded people should find a solution. Is this the only and rare instance of ill treating a child. What is the People''s form doing? It is time for every individual to work in such a way as to root out this problem. At this stage it not fair to take the judgement seat but I hope the authorities will take appropriate action. Joe Gonsalves

Abdul Salam needs to be sent back to Kerala and let him try hiring young children there. He has moved to Mangalore for the education of his children, yet slavery persists in his house. The man needs to be put behind bars. Daijiworld pls pursue the case and make sure A.S does not go scot-free.

This is just a tip of an iceberg. I was once working with a NGO for children and that is when we realized that there is not much we could do, since the city administration did not dare to support these causes with a whole heart. End of the day I would say the mistake lies in many angles. The parent, the employer and the moral responsibility of the city administration. If the city administration and the police decide to act against such things with vigor, it is not a impossible task. But everything from rescue to rehabilitation must go hand in hand.

As long as poor n illiterate people exist, there exist people who exploit their weakness. This had been going on, & will go on as long as we don''t love or help our neighbours. But nowadays even if v go out of our comfort zone to help them, those people who exploit them might label that acts as conversion. The experience is very disheartening for any social service agencies, who serve irrespective of any caste, creed, or relgion.

It is sad to hear these kind of stories in our city. One offence is child labour, second is abusive behaviour for sure, which has forced the girl to jump from window, for 04th floor. Unless these kind of employees are booked for offence committed and punished severely, these crimes will continue. Our systems are so weak n fragile that any culprit can get away with money & muscle power.

Had there been strict actions n punishments for these kind of law offenders, no body would have dared to do something like this. Thanks to daiji for bringing this incident to light. I hope the little girl recovers soon to lead a normal life.

There are many, many under aged children torturously working in the residence of many, many well respected personalities of the society. The neighbours of these rich houses know about such practice, the labour officials are aware of it but nobody is interested to act. What about the guardians of these children who are forcing these children to work in rich homes for a reasonable salary? They too should be answerable to it.

These Guys should be put behind bars. It is time that Neighbours or people who come across family or business people employing Minor Children should inform the police. It is the elite class of people who break laws. The reasons is that there is no fear to law as the Indian law is very weak.

Daijiworld, please pursue the case and keep us posted so at least the injured girl will be treated well and the people involved in this crime shall be dealt with severly. How can they be so cruel, they even have children of their own. How can one human being treat another this way. I always was under the impression that such things happenned in Kuwait and other gulf countries. But it does happen in my own home town too. How sad. God save the little girl
