Telangana village bans alcohol, banishes eve-teasers

Karimnagar, Dec 5: To eliminate sexual violence against women, a small village in Karimnagar district of Telangana is taking up new measures to keep the predators off the bay.

In the wake of the recent spine-chilling rape and murder of a veterinarian in Hyderabad, Vannaram, a nondescript village in Ramadugu Mandal, has decided to keep its girls from meeting such a fate.

The village panchayat has considered ridding the village of eve-teasers. The villagers have also decided to ban liquor and keep the village youth away from its influence.

The gram panchayat passed a resolution to this effect and saw no resistance to the curbs on the freedom of men.

Youngsters and elders alike came out in large numbers to support the resolution. On Tuesday, the villagers took a pledge to implement the law without any laxity. The rule states that if any woman is harassed by a man, the latter would face banishment.

The village secretary, P Navitha said it was heartwarming to see residents standing up to protect girls. The villagers also decided to make a conscientious effort to drill into the minds of boys that they need to respect girls.

Reportedly, there have been no incidents of misbehaviour with girls or women in the village in the last three months. The village youngsters have been taught to treat girls in the village as their sisters.

A girl from the village, Pushpalatha, said, “In the past, we used to be scared to attend functions alone at night, but we are no longer afraid of anyone in the village."

    Shankar,
You are fighting against your own logic.
Yesterday on onions price rocketing in the market, you suggested people to stop consuming onions.
Death by handing the rapists is the only remedy to discourage would be rapists.
People suggest all non-related remedies, ban alcohol, ban vulgar scenes in movies, double meaning dance, advertisements, effect of western culture, smart phones then what will remain in use. It's nothing but there is no fear law enforcement and punishment at all.

    |Well done villagers. Wish you all the best. Will this an eye opening incident to bjp who is running the country wihout providing protection to the citizens. They are busy only in creating problems and dividing the people in the name of religion. Everything they do has religion relation. Citizen amendment bill is nothign but to keep Muslims away from voting rights and unfortunately name sake muslims and chappal lickers of sangh parivar like Mukhatar Ansari, Shahnawaz, Mj akbar etc are supporting bjp on this controversial bill. Shame on you guys. These hypocrytes may be thinking that bjp is their God and they will remain alive for ever.

These people of a small village have set a good example for the people living in cities. When these people can take this bold step then nothing can stop others also to take these kind of step in the near future.
