Bengaluru: 70 traffic violations in one year, police slap Rs 15,400 fine on vegetable vendor

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Dec 16: Many motorists jump red signals in the city thinking that traffic police are not present at the junctions. Scores of two-wheeler riders do not wear helmet while riding bikes or scooters. However, they are unaware that the CCTVs fixed at strategic points on the road monitor the activities of vehicle drivers. As a witness to this, a vegetable vendor is made to pay a fine of Rs 15,400 for violating helmet rule 70 times in the past year.

After the new traffic rules were implemented throughout the country, many cases of heavy fines by the police were reported. Traffic police even fined a truck driver for wearing lungi while driving the truck. In addition, a tractor driver was also fined for driving the vehicle without the helmet. Now the case of vegetable vendor has also made news as he is slapped a fine of Rs 15,400.

As many as 70 cases were filed on the same scooter, which was used by Manjunath, a vegetable vendor in the past year. The police tracked the offender and handed him a really long challan of traffic violation and collected Rs 15,400 from him.

Manjunath, who resides in Yashawantpur of the city, was caught by the police two days ago when he was riding his scooter without helmet near Mahalaxmi Layout. When the traffic police caught him and put the number of his scooter in the PDA machine to check whether there are any previous offences on him, they were shocked to find that 70 cases of traffic violations are pending on the same scooter driven by Manjunath. The challan print out itself was quite long.

The police immediately seized the scooter of Manjunath and asked him to pay the fine and take the scooter from the traffic police station. Manjunath, who has a vegetable selling shop in Rajajinagar of the city paid the fine of Rs 15,400 on Saturday and got his scooter back from the possession of the police. His offences included jumping of red signal, not wearing helmet and triple ride. These cases were recorded based on the evidence from CCTV cameras.

Helmetless riders risk their own life. But wrong side riders risk other motorists and pedestrian lives and traffic police stand mute spectators for this.

Only poor people who struggle to earn some some (vegetable vendor in this case) will be fined. If CCTV has caught other high profile people or highly influential people doing same mistakes then they won't be fined. Make the rules same for everyone.
