Shimoga, Sep 14: "The leaders of the JDS and the Congress have been creating unnecessary problems in the state with the specific objective of hijacking the aim of the assembly session, which is aimed at concentrating on the subject of rural development. Former Prime Minister Deve Gowda should stop shedding crocodile tears and need to stop his undue affection towards his sons," said Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa. He was speaking at a press conference held here on Sunday September 13.
"The opposition parties are aiming to spread the belief that the minorities are not living happily in the state. In spite of the fact that law and order situation in the state is well-maintained, the opposition leaders have been issuing baseless statements to confuse the people and divert their attention," he complained.
He pointed out, that the watchman of the church in Hebbagodi that was recently vandalized, had said that two persons had launched the attack. On the other hand, he said, leader of the opposition, Siddaramaiah, had stated that a gang of about 15 persons was involved with the attack. "What inference can be drawn from this type of behaviour? My government is the only one in the entire country to bring every major incident to the notice of the central government within 24 hours of their happening. Still, former Chief Minister Kumaraswamy has complained to the Governor. What does he want to prove? With what motive these people are doing this?" he questioned.
The Chief Minister also came down heavily on the statement of Deve Gowda that the latter feels like committing suicide at the plight of the farmers. He advised Deve Gowda to stop shedding crocodile tears and nepotism towards his sons, and to come up with concrete suggestions if any, towards improving the lot of the farmers, to the state government and the Prime Minister. "Being a former Prime Minister, Gowda, instead of encouraging the farmers, is abetting suicide. Is he right?" he retorted. Yeddyurappa claimed that Deve Gowda had opposed a move of granting loans to farmers at 3% interest, when the former had mooted the same, when functioning as the deputy Chief Minister of the state. "When Deve Gowda announced in a public meeting at Hassan that granting of loans at 3% interest was impossible, I had brought it to the notice of Kumaraswamy. I ensured that a government order about this loan is issued within three days thereafter," Yeddyurappa claimed.
“Do the Congress Party and JDS want to say that no attacks ever happened during their tenure, on temples, mosques and churches?” Yeddyurappa questioned. Reacting to a statement by Kumaraswamy that he would have stripped the government of its respect and honour if he was a MLA, Yeddyurappa challenged the former chief minister to achieve this objective through his brother Revanna and wife, Anita Kumaraswamy, who are MLAs.
"'India Today' Weekly has ranked Karnataka as No. 1, as far as law and order situation is concerned. Shortly, the publication will be felicitating me at a function, in which union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee will also participate. If Deve Gowda is prepared to give me suggestions, I am prepared to visit him once a month," he announced. He felt that giving baseless statements about the law and order situation in the state works to dent the morale of the policemen.
Both Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president R V Deshpande and leader of the opposition Siddaramaiah, have reacted sharply to Yeddyurappa’s statements. While Deshpande said that he would be considering filing of a libel suit against the Chief Minister for alleging that his party has been conspiring to destabilize the state government, Siddaramaiah wanted the Chief Minister to hand over the church attack incident to Central Bureau of Investigation to bring out the truth.
