Puttur: Arecanut Support Price - Palemar Blames Centre

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (SP)

Puttur, Sep 21: Aiming to hit back at the Congress Party leaders, who have been accusing the state government of not making up its mind to come to the aid of the arecanut growers affected by the sub-par prices, district in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar put the blame squarely on the union government for the situation.

Speaking to reporters here on Sunday September 20, Palemar said that the state government had made preparations to announce support price for arecanut under the market intervention scheme. However, the union government did not evince interest in coming up with its share of the financial burden for the scheme. Still, the state government is finding out ways and means to come to the rescue of the arecanut growers, he explained.

"Union law minister M Veerappa Moily has been trying to put the blame on the state government for not announcing support price for arecanut. It is ridiculous that the Congress Party is insisting on the BJP to do what it could not, when it was in power in the state," he added.

The minister asked the concerned to either inform him or the policemen, if anyone demands money for affecting transfers.

Regarding implementation of the Gundia Hydro Electric Generation Project, Palemar said that the state is firm in its decision to go ahead with the execution of this project. About the adverse comments and opposition expressed about the project by the union environment minister Jairam Ramesh, he said that the minister had made public his opinion and the state is not bound to accept it.

Towards a cleaner environment, those who throw garbage in public places will be booked by enforcing stringint rules. Vehicles bringing garbage to unload in public places will be confiscated by the police department under the orders of the state government, he said.
