Bangalore, Sept 21: The newly elected Congress MLA from Govindarajanagar assembly constituency in Bangalore, Priyakrishna, finally took the oath on Monday, September 21.
Priyakrishna, who defeated the housing and muzrai minister V Somanna in last month’s assembly by-elections by a margin of over 5,000 votes, is the youngest MLA in the Karnataka assembly.

The by-election was caused by the resignation of the seat won by Somanna on the Congress ticket to join the ruling BJP, which rewarded him with a ministerial berth by persuading S N Krishnaiah Setty to resign.
Incidentally, Priyakrishna is the son of sitting Congress MLA, M Krishnappa, from the neighbouring Vijayangara assembly constituency in the city. Thus, Krishnappa and Priyakrishna have earned the rare distinction of being the only father-son duo of MLAs in the same house.
Priyakrishna delayed taking oath by almost a month after the by-election victory and skipped the just concluded week-long legislature session.
The state legislative assembly speaker S B Patil administered the oath to the newly elected youngest MLA in the presence of assembly speaker Jagadish Shettar in latter’s chamber in the state secretariat.
A large crowd of Congress workers with leader of opposition in the assembly Siddaramiah and his council counterpart V S Ugrappa, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president R V Deshpande, working president D K Shivakumar, Congress MLC and former union minister M V Rajashekaran and father M Krishnappa attended the simple oath-taking ceremony.
Talking to reporters after being sworn in as the MLA, Priyakrishna promised to take up development works in the constituency with the guidance of the senior leaders in the party.
