Mangaluru: Well-known Yakshagana bhagavath Subramanya Acharya commits suicide

Mangaluru, Jan 7: Nagar Subrahmanya Acharya (43), who was the lead Bhagawath of Mandarthi Yakshagana Mela, ended his life by consuming some poisonous substance. He committed suicide at the residence of his friend Santhosh at Kulshekar on Tuesday, January 7.

Acharya had worked at Vandse on Monday night. He reached the home of his friend at Mangaluru on Tuesday. 

Acharya was serving Mandarthi Yakshagana Mela since the last two decades, and currently he was attached to the first Mela. During the monsoon months, too he used to undertake 'Nadumane Yakshagana' trips. He was trained in the Yakshagana cente at Udupi and was the founding guide for the Sarelebettu children's Yakshagana Mela at Udupi. He had currently settled down at Nejar. He is survived by wife, son and a daughter.

Subrahmanya Acharya was a native of Nagar in Hosanagar taluk. Since the last some years, he was serving as Bhagawath in the first Mandarthi Mela. Santhosh and Acharya had worked together in the past in Mandarthi Mela. Santosh had later left Mandarthi Mela and joined Sasihithlu Yakshagana Mela.

The exact reason for this extreme step by him is not known. Mangaluru police are investigating.
