Mangaluru, Jan 16: Dakshina Kannada district president of Congress Publicity Committee, Dhananjay Adpangaya, addressing a press meet in the city on Wednesday January 15, stated that the Congress will take counter measures against the BJP's protest organized at Kanakapura against the erection of the statue of Jesus Christ there, by holding protest driven with the motto, 'no bloodshed, only harmony'.

"The major purpose of BJP and Hindu organizations in holding the said protest relating to the statue of Jesus Christ at Kapala Betta was to vitiate religious harmony. The way they behave has given rise to mistrust between the Hindus, Muslims and Christians. They try to mix religion in politics for bagging votes. We are preparing to face them politically. We will get support of the people who stand for harmony between all classes of people," he explained.

When the media persons wanted to know whether his party will organize protest, Adpangaya said holding protest meetings is a method that has become redundant. "We have an idea about how to organize the protest. We will follow that plan. People from all classes, castes, religion and faiths should come together to effectively tackle the BJP and Hindu organizations. We will draw inspirations from the preaching of Gandhi, Nehru, Vivekananda etc when organizing the programme," he said.

He said that D K Shivakumar, who has been following lofty principles of governance and humanity, had supported the demand of locals to set up a statue of Jesus Christ there as he felt it was just. But sadly the BJP has been trying to harm his reputation on this count, he said. He also pointed out that Swami Vivekananda had addressed the people of USA as brothers and sisters, and Indonesia has allowed Hindus to construct religious structures. He also drew the attention of the media to the fact that Prime Minster Narendra Modi had unveiled the statue of Basavanna in England.

District Congress spokesperson A C Vinayaraj, party leaders Abdul Saleem, Neeraj Paul, Vishwas Kumar Das and others were present.

The Congress is playing with religious fire.

As a Christian we don't want this statue if it's going to cause these problems. Spend the money on the poor. The Congress is going to ruin relations between christians and hindus

    1. Please, don't play politics in the name of Jesus Christ' s statue.
    2. Jesus Christ advocated peace, love and humility. If we truly honour him, Let's spread his message through our lives!
    3. Jesus Christ commanded us to honour the law of the land. We, including the law makers are supposed to honour every guidelines given in the constitution of India, including secular values enshrined in it for civility, peace and harmony

Why we have religions? To fight and kill one another or to worship our creator GOD? How we have to worship our creator GOD? Through lifeless buildings and statues or full of life human beings? We the supreme creatures of GOD's creation, not behaving like devil? Thank you and GOD bless each and every one of us.

To all those politicians or their "fans" across parties who are politicising religion:
As a Christian I detest the fact tha we firstly need a statue for whatever reason. I believe this money could be far better used for needy people with no limitations on caste or creed.
Do you really think that your protests are worth it?
Do you realizse that you and your teams could have spent time on more productive work that delviered social and economic benefits rather than having protests and strikes and choas in the name of god?
God did not create religion or create chaos that generated fear among humans. Unfortunately it is us who have done this and sadly we still think we are doing the right thing.
Wake up guys.. time to move on.
And yes, Mr. Congress party - I hate to say this - you have made yourself irrelevant by NOT DOING what really matters, its time to focus beofre you end up just like a dinosaur or a dodo which either way just went into extinction.
    Unbelievable!!!

Mr. Ashley, Agreed! We don't need a statue, Yes, i repeat we don't need statues, that is one part of the issue. Second part is the opposition by the fringe groups, why are they protesting? Lastly, you did not show your displeasure at the Sardar Statue or any other proposed statue, be it Shivaji or Ambedkar Statue in Maharashtra, couldn't that money be used for better purposes? Looks like we are scared by the opposition and threats by the fringe groups and putting up a feeble excuse to cover up our cowardice.
It is said in the Bible "If you are ashamed to acknowledge me in the public, i will also refuse to acknowledge you in front of my father" , and also how Judas Iscariot was making excuses when Mary Magdaline washed the feet of Jesus with expensive perfumed oil, Judas said the money could have been used for charity purposes.

Mr. Sunil, Agree we catholics are not interested in building statues, but we should not simply surrender to the bullying, threats and insults of the fringe groups.

Instead of holding protests and abusing catholics they could have just approached the Catholic leadership and asked them not to undertake the project, instead they choose to armtwist us.

One more excuse given was it is a grazing land for cows, but now they want to build some other statue in that place, so is it not a grazing land now?
By the way a Jesus statue in the proposed location would have meant development for that place, the place would have been a prefered destination for tourists, visitors and would have provided business, employment for locals.

Guess this is a classic case wherein you jump the gun just to iterate a point. I have and will always say that we did not need a statue of unity. For me that is not necessary. I have stated my clear opposition to this on this forum as well as many other which have even finally blocked me and i do not intend to defend my case on this . By writing about cowardice on a paper does not portray me or you as brave.

The fact of the matter lies that we have parties irrespective who they are dividing the fabric of the nation and we as citizens are trying to advocate on thier behalf. Rather than look at this all of us are trying to polarise ourselves. On fringe groups protesting, this is bound to happen till such time that the so called educatded Indian is willing to listen to and get carried away by this emotion that is misued by politcians.

And if I may, let us avoid quoting religious texts in discussions which go and are clearly to be seen as up and beyond the core of the discussion. I speak for myself and say that i definetely am not worthy to speak on the holy word, rather i would attempt to live by it.

Please dont fight among yourselves and deepen the depth of your enemity. Among protest, agitation, hatred, fights, agitation, issuing notices just dont build statue of christ....it will be like controversial statue. Instead, build hospitals, ashrams to the destitutes, garden, develop land into agricultural one, where some will get life long jobs to take care of their family.....building statue will provide temporaryjobs. if you politicians set us good example by doing good work, we too will follow in your footstep...

Well said Cynthia, these kind of protests vs counter protests are just to prove the existence of particular groups or the party's, only way to exhibit the money and muscle powers. when they find new topic they will forget the present one.

Dear Sir, we are not fighting for the statue, infact if you read the comments, all of us Christians are saying no to the statue. This money can be used to feed the scorrs of poor which will reflect well with the teachings of Jesus. It is saddening to see that we all have become a divided society and divided by relegion and we all say all relegions teach peace. But we fight amongst ourselves. At times i wonder if all of us are above God himself. Because we are out to bring justice to God. Unfortunate, we humans will never learn. Because all this has to happen when the world comes to an end.

    Idolatry misunderstood ??

Man's idols are too much addiction to power, money, pleasures, wealth, And Also too much popularity, too much adoring cinestars, sports (stars), materialism, too much believing in one's or others strength, beauty, intelligence, opinions all these worldly things one often worship in excess instead of worshipping God, which are also against 1st commandment of God and not statues !!
