Mangalore: Train, Air Traffic Affected, Agricultural Fields Inundated

Mangalore, Oct 3: As there is no let up in the fury of the rain god, the train and air services were affected on Friday October 2. The meteorological department has predicted the heavy rains to continue for two more days, and the farmers are facing the prospect of losing their standing crops. Karwar receivedd 18 cms of rain, while Dharmastala and Subrahmanya recorded a rainfall of 16 and 14 cms respectively.
Karwar, Udupi and the city received heavy rains at night. Rivers Netravati, Kumaradhara and Payaswini in Dakshina Kannada district, are overflowing. Collapse of a foot-bridge in Beltangady, landslide of hillocks at Venur and Laila, inundation of low-lying areas like Nattibail in Puttur, collapse of a house at Bajpe Kolambe are some of the incidents that have been reported.

The flight to the local airport from Muscat did not arrive on Friday. The passengers were taken to Kozhikode, from were they left for Muscat. The arrival of the flight from Kozhikode got delayed. The train services on Konkan Railway Line have been severely affected. Train traffic in Wadi-Mantralaya route and Kurnool-Secunderabad too has been affected because of heavy rains. The Matsyagandha Express that departed from Mumbai arrived here on Friday morning, but the train to Mumbai in the afternoon, was cancelled. Likewise, the train expected to arrive in the city from Mumbai on Saturday morning has been cancelled. The Verna passenger train from the city returned after travelling only upto Kumta. The Lokamanya Tilak - Tiruvanantapuram Netravati Express train service that should have arrived today, to start its return journey on Sunday, has been cancelled.
The Ernakulam-Nizamuddin Express was diverted via Shoranur, Palghat, Erode, Jolarpettai, Tirupati and Vijayawada, which is a circuitous route. The Kochuveli-Dehradun Express has also been diverted on the said route. The routes of several other trains have also been changed because of rains. A Kingfisher flight that was to land in Goa arrived in the city, as it could not land there. Because of inclement weather, a flight could not land in Kozhikode. It instead, landed in Kochi. As it went back to Kozhikode from there and then came here, the Dubai flight from the city was delayed by five hours.
Hosmutt Bridge near Subrahmanya got inundated for a few hours on Friday. Kumaradhara Bridge too is facing the prospect of going under water, if the rains continue to lash. Paddy crops have been destroyed at various places of the twin-districts and the losses will rise further, if the water level does not recede in a day or two. The fishermen have been asked not to venture out for fishing, as the sea can turn turbulent, following torrential rains in the coast.
