Mangalore, Oct 9: “To help the flood victims in districts of North Karnataka, the Indian Christian community has decided to donate 1,000 houses and extend help to 25,000 victims. So, we have started a collection and information centre at the Bishop House premises in Kodialbail”, said Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore Diocese.

Speaking at the collection centre on Friday October 9, the Bishop said that all churches under Mangalore Diocese will perform a special prayer and through this collect donations from the community members.

“We have decided to help the victims by constructing 1,000 houses in Gulbarga, Raichur, Bijapur, and Bellary districts with the help of all community members across India”, he said.

“A team of doctors has been sent to assist in relief efforts and there are two more teams ready to rush to the flood-affected areas. Medicines have also been sent with them which are also donations”, said the Bishop.

“We have asked all the institutions and hospitals to join in this great work of help”, he said adding that clothes, food materials, dishes, medicines, school books, and uniforms will be accepted at the collection centre.

The collection and information centre will be open till Tuesday October 20 and its telephone number is 0824-6451224. It will provide details for donors in the diocese as well as in Udupi and Kasargod districts.

Donors can send in cheques and demand drafts to account number 2222660510190001 with the Catholic Syrian Bank, Mangalore branch, favouring ‘Diocese of Mangalore-Flood Relief Fund’ or directly to the collection centre.

The Bishop asked all community members living in the country and abroad to donate and join in the holy work of helping the flood victims. He also said that teams of community members, nuns of the diocese and others are also joining the relief efforts in the flood- affected areas.

Bishop D’Souza blessed three vehicles loaded with clothes and food materials, which will travel to the distressed areas.

Vicar general Monsignor Dennis Moras Prabhu, Fr William Menezes, public relations officers, Fr Oniel D’Souza, director of CODP, Fr Marshal Monteiro, and leaders of the community Roy Castelino, M P Noronha, and Ivan D’Souza, were present.

The news is great. This is what we expect from our leadership to do for the community. Instead of building churches, massive buildings (will be revered by future generation), the honorable bishop is helping the needy. GOD BLESS HIS work. I call upon people to support the cause of the needy.

A noble endeavor by Christian community. When any preaching community realises that helping hands are always better than praying lips, the society can be rest assured that they are under the right leadership. You have once again proved that humanity is the essence of your service.

The CM says 350,000 houses damaged, but correct number of houses to be re-built is still a unknown figure. The Bishop and his team should work with thier own network to build houses for the poor who cannt afford for it.The churches and its representative with NGO's can find out more accurate data of BPL people and help them with clothes and shelter. The crores of rupees by PM to CM will be a dream project will take years to get implimented. The State Government should hand over the funds to NGO's who can impliment this at the grass root level.

I am happy to read how the church again helps victims of a natural disaster. Christians are a minority in India and they offer so much help. May God bless your efforts and deeds. You have done so much for the poor. Best Kurt
