Mangalore: High Drama Mid Air – AI Inflight Crew Face up to the Challenge

Mangalore: High Drama Mid Air – AI Inflight Crew Face up to the Challenge
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SB)

Mangalore, Oct 13: Air India, India's national carrier’s nightmarish experiences seems to see no end. In the recent past, right from the impact of economic slowdown to employees strike, the company has been going through turbulent times.

Air India's most profit making sector Dubai – Mangalore has embroiled itself in endless controversies since last few months. Latest is the erratic behaviour of a passenger aboard Air India Express flight from Dubai that arrived at the local airport on Sunday morning has brought the carrier in the news, especially among the Mangaloreans worldwide. The incident posed quite a challenge and tested the efficiency of the crew to handle pressure.

Official Clarification

It was reported that passenger Mohammed Ashraf (28) from Puttur had bitten male in-flight crew. However, Chellam Prasad, area manager, Air India Express, Mangalore clarified that the said passenger did not bite any of the inflight crew, bit in fact had slapped the only male inflight crew Nayan Purohit on board. The other three inflight crew members were females”, she informed.

"It was really a challenging job for these young crew members as they really struggled to control the changing behaviour of Ashraf, who seemed disturbed. Through out the incident, Nayan kept his cool and even went up to the extent of feeding the man with some food after the crew managed to tie his hands to the seat, said Chellam Prasad.

However, the most challenging and fearful situation arose when Ashraf rushed to the cabin threatening to open the entrance door of flight. It was exemplary presence of mind show by the crew members to control him at that stage and put him back to his seat, she said adding that at the stage he put the life of the entire 120 passengers at risk.

When queried as to why the flight think of an emergency landing at the nearby airport like it did few weeks back when flight to Dubai landed in Mumbai airport when couple of passengers misbehaved with cabin crew, Chellam Prasad said that Ashraf began creating problems midway and we were left with no option, but reach our destination.

Currently Ashraf from Kinnimajal Atoor in Puttur taluk is in police custody and the investigation is underway. Ashraf had gone to Dubai on a four-year visa to work as car driver there. Reportedly, he sought leave to visit home on September 18, but was mentally disturbed as the same was not granted.

Co-passengers’ Response

When Daijiworld contacted one of the co-passengers, she said that situation had turned tense inside the flight and behaviour of Ashraf was unacceptable. She praised the cabin crew for handling the situation in a polite and professional way. "Service of the cabin crew was pleasant throughout the journey", she said.

Chellam Prasad expressing gratitude to co-passengers, said that few of the co-passengers came to the rescue of the cabin crew, and helped bring situation under control. "We are really grateful to passengers on board, Madhukar, Mahale, Bhasker,  M Khan and Ramakrishna for their timely help”, she said.

Reading the incident on dajiworld, few readers from Dubai have expressed surprise over the report on the behaviour of Ashraf. A reader Samad writes "Ashraf is a strong person, and has no past history of mental problem. “However he was suffering from Asthama," he adds. Another reader writes, “Ashraf was going through depression and was under medication. Lack of sleep and heavy workload on previous day might have caused the above said behaviour, he adds.

Please consider the following while considering the passenger's mis behaviour or whatso ever: 1.Does our flag carrier treats the passengers the same way for US or European flights? 2.To give an example-consider the midair fight on dubai-lucknow flight of AI between pilot and crew. Why is it so? 3.In my more than 25 years' flight experience I have noticed that the crew has a different opinion abt middle east passengers and do not consider them as equal(I have seen misbehaviour from many labor class passengers and that might have given to the feeling that all gulf passengers are labor class?) A general training to the crew on the psychology of gulf passengers who return home after 1-2 years of secluded life and sudden opening to happiness during his/her 1-11/2 months' leave and its effects may really help.

I really appreciate the efforts of crew members but the end result dealt a blow to all these efforts. The cabin crew should have complained to police formally & should have arranged for some medical attention once they land. This is called courtesy /Humanity which lacks in this incident as investigation can be done anytime but medical intervention is urgently required as in some cases time is important factor. This is the difference between Indian Flights & other Flights

I think the case of Mr. Ashraf should be dealt sympathetically as his friends say that he is a strong person and this behaviour of his could be because of work stress or so. We definitely cannot say that everyone is a Hijacker or terrorist. A thorough medical investigation will be a good idea.

I think we should see the both the sides. working in gulf is not easy for those like labours, drivers, sales representatives, its hard sometime to keep our mind stable, then this guy is a driver and he didnt get his leave request when he wanted may be he is suffering from depression. he needs medical attention not police custody.  Good job done by crew members. Be more patient,

Read this shocking report in one of the UAE media ....Why???? DUBAI // Aircraft passengers had to help crew members overpower a man who tried to open the door thousands of feet in the air, demanding that he be allowed to leave. The packed Air India Express flight, with more than 130 people on board, was travelling from Dubai to the southern Indian city of Mangalore when Mohammed Ashraf, 28, allegedly began attacking crew members and fellow passengers.

He was restrained but eventually jumped out of his seat and ran towards the cabin, where he threatened to open the exit door. She added: “He had gone cold and this worried the crew. She tried to stop him and this upset him. “He kicked the lady crew member several times. We had only one male crew on board and he quickly intervened. He prevented any women from going near the man.” The male crew member approached Mr Ashraf and tried to calm him down. Later, however, Mr Ashraf allegedly attacked him and some of the other passengers. “He hit the male crew member quite badly,” said Ms Prasad. “He had a black eye, swollen lips and other bruises. Our staff did extremely well to control the man and handle the situation.” Passengers went to help the crew and pin down Mr Ashraf. One of them, a young student, said: “It was scary, that is all I can say right now.”

HOW SAD??????for this young disturbed person.I have seen so many young men roaming on the road without food, not knowing where r they!! WHY

This incident should be dealt with lot of scrutiny, and the passenger should be sent a trauma centre to identify the cause of his action. We all live life with some depression but we have no right to humiliate any human being in public. If these cases are not dealt with strict action then many more might pop up. Why do others need to fly with risk factors and chose Air India as their preferred carrier.

One cannot connect the misbehaviour of this passenger to a terrorist as stated in the comments. The situation of this person could be due to some high stress in his work or the condition which he was travelling may have made him sick mentally. Such trauma are temporary. Mohd Ashraf maybe going thru a lot of work pressure in his job or some family commitment whatever the reason.

With due respect to the cabin crew handling the case professionaly has set an example that all cabin crew are not bad. Sometimes we as passenger travelling thru Air India has to bear the rude behaviour of the cabin crew specially the female. At some point of time their rude behaviour could be unintentional and again severe flying stress.

Well done. We should thank the crew members for their timely action. Such persons with mentally disturbed should not be allowed travel without somebody known to them. Each and every one working in the Gulf countries are mentally or physically or financially disturbed.

It doesn't mean that he put all passengers life at risk. A thorough investigation and medical check up to be done. AN APPROPRIATE ACTION TO BE TAKEN. Patrick, we know about mentally disturbed person. The person in the mid air do such things, which means that he is not actually mentally disturbed. I have seen many people in the mid air disturb co passengers after drinks otherwise with their mobile.

Cabin crew are highly trained for a wide variety of emergencies and how to respond more frequent situations may. This passenger wasn't a terrorist. He wasn't carring a weapon, then what is a high drama mid air? He's just a guy with mental problems.

Plane landed safely as scheduled and no passengers injuries were reported. Airport medical services may be able to provide valuable assistance instead to handover to police. Air India Express please take it easy....! Tourist or Passengers planning to leave for India will be thinking twice about plan as per CNN news from USA.

Well done Nayan Purohit and also other crew members! and also some of the passengers ! Patience pays good results. Ashraf's behaviour is uncalled for. Whatever may be the reason for the depression,he cannot risk his and others life. Air India should improve its in-flight treatment like serving some proper food etc. like other Airlines.

If the passenger acted likewise due to his mental problems, he has to get medical attention, and let him go. As the world economic conditions are causing more stress to people, events of this nature may be repeated in the future. In such situations, the passengers may have to play the role of police to control the critical situation, because the cabin crew can't bring the matter under control by themselves.

Is there no problem from Air India? if not,why it happens to our national flag carrier? One could easily distinguish quality of state owned service and private owned service right from road transport to air transport.Jeoparadising passenger's safety must be dealt with iron hand by the law.But all the times one airline(air india) different people?Need to introspect by Air India officials.

All is not well with the expatriate working in the Gulf. They leave their loved ones behind to earn for their future still they don't get an oportunity to be with their loved ones during the time of fesivity & celebration. It is naturally very, very frustrating and sometime such people go out of their rocker. But what made him go against the other co-passanger? He need an urgent medical help. treatment

These kind of incidents are reporting only in Airindia express.Very Rarely reported in other flights. It is better other flight carriers think of starting flights from mangalore because mangaloreans are bored of AirIndia Express.

Police should take strict action against this kind of passengers. If he is menatally disturbed person then he should be banned to travel again in any airlines and without showing medical fitness certificate, he should not be allowed.

Henry! Understand the situation. When the crew has exhibited exemplary compassion inspite of all odds, it is expected of you to atleast be compassionate with your comments. A mentally disturbed mind knows not what it is doing. Tomorrow, it may be YOU.

I really appreciate the efforts of the crew members. This time when I travelled by Air India Express, cabin crew Mr. Eipin was really helpful cos I have air sickness. He and the other crew members have really taken care. Although the flight is not upto the mark but the crew do pay attention to the needs of the passengers.
