Bangalore, Nov 4: The landmark century old 'home for the aged' run by the Little Sisters of the Poor congregation on Hosur road near Baldwins School here is all decked up for a year-long celebration.

French nun Jeanne Jugan from the congregation was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in the Vatican on October 11. The year-long celebration of the canonization was kicked off with the archbishop Bernard Moras presiding over the public function and holy mass at St Joseph’s Auditorium here on Wednesday November 4. Over 1,000 people attended the function. Anglo Indian MLA Derrick Fullinfaw and former IGP FTR Colaco among others were present.

"In today’s world, there is increased negligence of the sick and the old and therefore it is noteworthy that the Pope has canonized Jeanne Jugan for her compassionate love for the sick and the poor. The work of the sisters across the world, and in our very own city at the homes for the aged, cannot go unnoticed", he said. "Our country has a rich heritage of respectful relationships between the young and the old, I hope and pray, we retain this heritage of respect for elders," he added. He invited the gathering to spread the message of compassionate care for the sick, the old and the dying.

Earlier in the week, the archbishop participated in a function along with Governor Hans Raj Bhardwaj organized release a stamp to commemorate the canonization of Sr Jeanne Jugan.

The care and concern for the sick by the Liitle Sisters of the Poor is indeed praise worthy.I have personally experienced in my ministry at Guntur in Andhra Pradesh during my two years of novitiate. It is our duty to take care of the old which we find lacking in our society due to the influence of more and more westernization and modernization. We need to think seriously about this as the number of houses for home for the aged increases. Their service to the society is really great.
