Mangaluru: Award-winning writer Richie John Pais passes away at 51

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Mar 1: Well-known Konkani writer, dramatist and editorial head of Daijiworld.com succumbed to his 75-day battle against cancer early on the morning of Sunday, March 1 at Father Muller Hospital. He leaves behind his mother, wife, two children, family members and thousands of well-wishers.

Richard John Pais, the 51-year-old, also known as RJP, contributed immensely to Konkani and English literature.

Richie had joined Daijiworld in 2015 as a senior editor and was heading the editorial team for the last two years.

Richie’s essays, especially satirical ones on current affairs, were highly popular in the Konkani world. His short stories and poems have been published in Konkani periodicals regularly. His first book ‘Kolovori’, a collection of satirical essays in Konkani, was published in the year 2012, and he went on to publish two more books ‘Vidhushak’ and ‘Fathor’. In January 2020, Richie was chosen for the prestigious TMA Pai Award for ‘Fathor’.

As a dramatist, Richie had created a niche for himself on the Konkani stage. His drama ‘Paanch Mornam’ became a trendsetter in Konkani theatre, and his second drama ‘Tum Vhorto Dhonea’ (Lord, You are Great), based on the Book of Job in the Old Testament, saw resounding success with several shows in various parts of the coastal region. A soft-spoken and straightforward person, Richie had always encouraged budding talents and brought innovation in Konkani drama.

Pro-active, healthy, and an approachable Richie was fine until the first week of December 2019 until he started complaining of acidity and vomiting. A week later, when vomiting did not cease, he was admitted to Father Muller Hospital, Kankanady. After going through various tests, he was diagnosed with carcinoma metastatic with obstructive jaundice, a type of cancer which was spreading rapidly.

He fought the battle with positive mind and was hopeful of recovery. He even wrote some emotional Konkani poems expressing his fight against cancer. His health deteriorated over the last couple of days and he passed away around 4.30 am on Sunday.

He was the lone breadwinner for his family. Several readers of Daijiworld had contributed for his medical treatment after an appeal was published on Daijiworld last Sunday.

Funeral rites will be held on Monday March 2, with public viewing at Rosario Cathedral from 2.45 pm, and funeral Mass at 3.30 pm followed by burial at Jeppu cemetry.

Pity that a talented and young writer has passed away so quickly. Perhaps our Lord required him there in his kingdom more than here. Never ever felt he was sick till I read in daiji. I dealt with him about two times and he was prompt enough to answer me. Condolences to the bereaved family. R.I.P.

My brief and recent interactions with Richie gave me the impression that despite work pressure (working from home) and being a workaholic, he had time to patiently hear me out, and possibly others like me, and help out on a professional level. I have gone through his books presented to me and I found in them a thread of underlying subtle humour and irony (without being preachy) in them. May his dedicated life here below be amply rewarded by the Lord where he is now.
May his family, colleagues and friends, who kept vigil on him during his terminal illness, be consoled and reconciled to our collective loss.

When I met him a month ago at Fr Muller's, we discussed literature, poetry, drama, journalism, media and the like. He never discussed sickness and death. In fact, he was trying to convince others that the suffering he was undergoing was not very serious. He had several plans for his life, after he recovered and returned from the hospital.
Richie loved life intensely. He was fond of experimentation. Tried his hand everything, those his first love was literature and poetry. He was always exuberant with the attitude 'Tum Vortho Dhanya' (Lord, you are great). To the one who loved life immensely God has rewarded with Life in Abundance, the Eternal Life.
My heart goes out to his family, mother, sister and most of all his wife and two daughters. May the Almlghty Himself take care of them.
Dear Richie, Good Bye till we meet you to listen to your inspiring poems, in the bosom of the Heavenly Father.

Having worked with Richie for nearly five years, I had come to like him a lot. He was an excellent human being, down-to-earth, talented, and looked things in lighter vein. It is difficult to believe that he is no more amidst us, leaving behind his devastated family at such a young age. Cancer has been killing people with impunity and I hops someone will find a miracle cure to browbeat this killer disease. I pray to the Almighty to see that Richie's close ones do not face any problem and have a great future. The fact that he was good human being and was loved by score of people will ensure that his family will get the support out of the fruits of his noble deeds I believe.

Sincere condolences to the family of Richie.John.Pais .R.I.P. As a travelogue writer and patron of theatre myself definitely feel that 51 years is no age for death as we all have to die someday and thanks to theatre his memory will always be alive.

RJP blended humour and satire in his writings, something which most contemporary literary greats cannot do. Satire humour (vyanga in Kannada) is crucial part of literature, since it has got greater capacity to fortell truth to its readers, by making them think. RJP had this special knack in his writings, he will be deeply missed - RIP

RIP Richie. You will be remembered for your straight forward attitude and making others to forget one’s worries and bring smiles whenever you talk.
Sickness never appeared in your appearance and you were always positive in approach.
Sad, lost a good friend in you. God has better plans in you.
    Condolences to the bereaved family.
