Students at Bhatkal turn saffron in protest

KARWAR, Nov 9 (Express Buzz): It seems as if controversy over the burkha refuses to go away from Karnataka’s coastal areas.

While colleges in Mangalore and Bantwal grappled with similar problems, this time some students at the Government College at Bhatkal who objected to the right of fellow students to attend colleges in the burkha.

The row which started a week back, remains unresolved despite the intervention of JD Naik, Bhatkal MLA, and the president of the betterment committee.

Some students, who objected to some girls wearing a burkha to college, have been demanding the introduction of a uniform dress code. The college betterment committee, which held a meeting a few days ago, resolved to maintain status quo till the principal seeks a clarification from the Commissioner of Collegiate Education.

The committee had warned of action against students who tried to create disturbance.

A few students have been attending the college wearing saffron clothes with vermilion on their foreheads since Friday.

Some girls too attended the college wearing saffron colour veils on Saturday. “Why should we not do so when a few students were allowed to attend the college wearing burkha?” some said.

Naik told Express that guidelines have been sought from the government. Reacting to the students attending college in saffron clothes, he said he has asked the principal to take action.

Meanwhile, principal RI Khan said that the controversy would be resolved by Monday.

Here is not a matter of religion. Here is a matter of uniform. Firstly they should know who commented on saffron because u should know Wat do u mean by uniform? Uniform indicates we r equal. There is no religion, no rich, no poor, no caste while we r in the premises of college/school. Wearing burka in college and school, it shows there is no value for uniform. They can show religious spirit outside the school and college by wearing burqua but not inside college where uniform compulsary. First they should know we r for nation, nation starts from school and college not from religion. Whatever the students had shown by wearing saffron is only the protest to keep the value of uniform in college/school to avoid discrimination among students but not the purpose of religious aspects. It should b kept in mind who had commented against those protesting students, if u have guts put ur comments on burka system which really a punishment for womens of Muslim community which those women couldnt protest due hard rules of their religion. If u have guts, then Katrina kaif, Sania Mirza etc r Muslim girls y not r they wearing burkas. They r not muslims?
Infront of nation all r equal and In India all d girls have freedom to live like katrina Kaif, Sania Mirza they may b from Hindu, Muslim or Christein. Finally they r human beings not prisoners to keep them in burqa for whole life.

No need to be excited. The students have freedom to wear whatever they want. The color is negligiable. The BJP should be loyal to RSS always. Becuase RSS & company doing all these things to hide the ongoing issues in BJP. Anyway, the BJP may ban the burka. But, they have get the persmission from JANARADANA REDDY.

There is a difference between religion and faith. wearing saffron does not make you a Hindu and wearing Burkha does not make you a Muslim. India's youth are taking a cue from its leaders and political parties. Just like the government is afraid of the MNS, the college is afraid of its students. while the rest of the world and its youth struggle to go to college and find jobs in this economy and try to feed their families, India continues to argue about culture, religion, dress code, changing names for states, irrelevant things. We choose a half hearted government.

I read the U.S. and the Indian news daily and not once has the Indian Prime Minister and President taken a stand on anything. I have not seen the president at all. In the U.S. Obama is everywhere. when there is an issue in a state he or his delegates always have an opinion or they do something about it. I hope India wakes up eventually, but dont hold your breath because it is going to taking many years..

Dear Mr. Prashant, Mumbai, Dubai -Appreciate your comments towards your community interest and dignity in response to Lydia, Lobo, Kadri’s comments. Please explain what is wrong in her comments? She has not insulted any Hindu God. She just expressed her feeling in a way that ‘Here, we see a full Hare-Rama-Hare-Krishna-like gang in saffron clothes’ and doing impiety things backed by religious fanatics.

Just think over, what is the need to wear saffron clothes when the students attend the college. Can you wear the same attire when you attend your office in Dubai or elsewhere? One has to appreciate that Burqa worn by Muslims girls and veil by nuns is an age old religious practice. Whilst you support this controversy, why you have come to a Muslim country to earn your daily bread why this derogatory thinking against your own brethren (like Muslims and Catholics).

Education is transformation of oneself.Protest for the sake of protest has no sense. After all if some are comming in Burka what the others or the institution is loosing and by these kind of protest what they are gaining?Does this speaks Good about the community,or graceful to the community and society?

If yes then let the protesting student go to the school or to the college with this kind of dress. What we eat is not importent but how we dress and and present ourself in a particular place will grace our personality. Will these student go to the interviews or to any functions in this dress? If yes JAI HO B.D.

You students are young and a long way to go. What practicing Muslim girls are doing is not defying anybody but following their religion like practicing Hindus following their religion by not eating beef and UP Hindus sporting a Choti in their head. These are the religious belief which the practicing Muslims or Hindus will not try to break. Similarly, practicing Muslim will not dilute their belief by singing a controversial Vande Mataram because a purely monolithic Islam don’t permit bowing to anything other then the Creator or The Only One, Allah.

It has nothing to do with patriotism because love for your country is not limited to forcing one to wing Vande Mataram. Patriotic National Songs are sung to unite India and not otherwise. There are so many problems the common people, specially the poor & neglected class are facing. Both Hindus and Muslims divert your explosive energy into constructive use and help those helpless poor to come out of their poverty with education and job. Try to be good to humanity in general, May God Bless You All.

Dear Hindu brothers please stop this nonsense. The dress you wear on these pictures is holy and do not misuse it please. The dress and words printed has a deep meaning, but you wear it for fun and to create a tense situation for Muslim brother and sisters who follow these burkha or veil since ages. What is their fault if they wear this or cover their head? Many of Your parents went to schools where the Nuns wear veils and covered their heads at all places and your parents never complained and now you wear this fancy dress just because you have sponsors who provide this free of cost.

I don’t think the sponsors will provide soap to your parents to wash this dress so you can wear it again. How long you can demo this dress. May be a week or month and then you will be tired of this. They won’t stop because they wore it through out their life and it is there since ages. You really do not know the future consequences of these actions. The Big Uncle Osama and other fractions of fundamental groups are watching you every now and then.

Today you are in the college and feel like a James Bond because you are supported by God fathers like BD, RSS, Rama Sene and many other Sene without a Senapathi. Once you are out of college and on the look for a job in Mumbai or Bangalore you can be a prey of the fundamental group which always works on a long term plan. They are closely watching your inhumane actions on the minorities and they will take revenge when you are meek and week. Once you are out of the college then none of these God fathers will sponsor you or provide you saffron robes to protect you because they sponsor only those who are young, because they are easy to bend and mould. The agenda of these sponsors are to create a havoc in minds of Young Hindu blood who in future will be a 100% vote bank.

It is very pity that these students are getting influenced by communal thoughts. No one had any problem with hijab before but now some organizations are corrupting peoples mind. If suppose college authority agrees that these students can wear the cloth which symbolize their belief please tell me how many of them will wear it?.

This clearly shows that it is not a TRUE LOVE for their belief but just HATE for our belief. These controversies are purposely created to harm, insult us and to divide the people. So brothers and sisters don’t be biased on your thoughts. Use your own intelligence to understand what is wrong and what is right.

Every one should understand that educational institution are learning place and the all the student abide with college rules and not their own rules. All the student what ever the background of their religion or cast should wear the uniform and not wear anything and let they practice their religion at their home or anywhere “DEAR STUDENT YOUR BURKHA AND HALF SCARVES, SAFFRON COLOUR LUNGI, TOWELS, VEILS AND NAMA’S SHOULD BE KEPT OUTSIDE THE COLLEGE CAMPUS” outside the college campus you wear these things no one will say anything about it, so “DEAR PARENT PLEASE TEACH YOUR CHILDERN BECOME A GOOD STUDENT RATHER THAN A OBJECT FOR SOME NUISENCE IN THE COLLEGE”

These youths are misguided,as they don't know why they are there in the first place. Attain education first, any other dress or code should be secondary. After Ram Janma Bhoomi agitation saffron is misused by some people, thinking being a hindu one need to wear kavi. Kavi is the symbol of sanyas or delinking from all earthly desires. I call upon Hindu religious leaders to restrict wearing of this cloth only to those people who have renounced worldly possessions & 'mohas'.

If the sanctity of religious symbols to be maintained I think they need to take this first & foremost step. Let anybody come to college with any attire,as long as they come atleast with some cloths on. Let these students go back to our roots-& join 'gurkul's & study ancient literature & vedic lessons instead of learning the alien modern education. There they will be allowed to wear dhotis, shawls or 'kaupinas' as their gurus would proscribe. Obey your Gurus first in our true Bharathiya Tradition.

Today's youth if their parents do not have resources to buy western clothes, refuse to go to college in a dhoti. Here, we see a full Hare-Rama-Hare-Krishna-like gang in saffron clothes. Tell you what this is just a drama. You ignore them they will revert to pants. As for the girls wearing Burkhas, it must be limited until the college gate and a head covering should be allowed any further from there. Let the students decide - do they want to practice their religion in the colleges or concentrate on studies ?
