Mangaluru, Mar 6: 'TEQIP 1.3’, a two-day Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) TEQIP cell training programme for lab instructors was inaugurated at St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) here on Friday, March 6.

The programme was organised by Department of Electronics and Communication of (SJEC) in association with Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belagavi, Aryabhatta Knowledge University, Patna, Bihar and Biju Patnaik University of Technology, Rourkela, Odisha.

H V Manjunath, chief manager, Administration, MRPL inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp along with Fr Wilfred Prakash D'Souza, director, SJEC, Fr Rohit D'Costa, assistant director, SJEC, Fr Alwyn Richard D'Souza, assistant director, SJEC, and Dr Rio D'Souza, principal, SJEC.

In his inaugural speech H V Manjunath said, "’TEQIP 1.3’ is a unique programme and SJEC has designed it very well. The training includes the particulars and live demonstrations, something that will help the delegates to increase their knowledge and confidence in their field. For students, teaching staff and lab instructors are like the two faces of the same coin. Both play an important role in the life of a student."

"Inquiry, entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity always help to upgrade our knowledge. Students also expect upgraded theories from teachers. Nowadays materialism destroyed all ethics and moral values. So teaching faculty, as well as non-teaching faculty, tries to teach ethics along with professional subjects. After completing the course as professionals they should serve society as well as the nation. Protection of environment also another major duty which should be taught to the students besides the subjects of the curriculum," he added.

In his presidential speech, Fr Wilfred said, "More than 50 technical staff from 13 colleges participating in 'TEQIP 1.3'. Lab and technical instructors are the key people in every academic institution. Students are always more expecting from them. This compels them to get updated and keep themselves prepared. Same time the teaching staffs should give importance to ethics, moral values and love on nature."

In his introductory speech, Dr Rio said, "'TEQIP 1.3 in an important workshop hosting by SJEC. 'VTU TEQIP' cell received more than 90 proposals for conducting the programme. But only SJEC and another institution got approval to organize this. The lab is playing an important role in academic studies. But I feel somewhere this has been a neglected area. Understanding this 'VTU TEQIP' cell took the initiative to organise training programmes for lab instructors and technical staff of colleges. We are happy to host this event. I think this training programme will help the technical staff to sharpen their knowledge and work. It gives a message to them that they should be trained, which can be helpful to the students and themselves."

Dr Dayakshini HoD, Department of ECE welcomed the dignitaries and delegates. Reshma K J assistant professor, Department of ECE rendered the vote of thanks. Sadhika Shetty assistant professor, Department of ECE compered the event.

The training programme includes sessions on procedures to be followed during the replacement/installation and up-gradation of electronic equipment/software. It will also address techniques to develop communication skills, behavioural skills and to create awareness on environmental safety, public health and occupational health.

Experienced resource persons from MRPL, Mangaluru; CSGI, Bengaluru; Mangaluru City Corporation and SNM Polytechnic, Moodbidri, will train the participants over two days.
