Mumbai, Nov 9: The third anniversary celebrations of metro-based Kannada Kairali monthly magazine of Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka and Kasargod border district of Kerala, was held at Dr M Vishveshwarayya auditorium of Karnataka Sangh, located at Matunga (West), here on Sunday November 8.
Karnataka former chief minister and MP H D Kumaraswamy inaugurated the programme and presented Samaja Ratna title awarded by South Indian Cultural Co-ordination Committee to Mohammed Haji.
Speaking on the occasion, former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy said that the responsibilities of media have increased in the time mire by global terrorism, border and communal clashes. Kannada Kairali monthly editor Abdul Rehman Subbayyakatte deserves to be honoured for his courage in publishing the Kannada monthly magazine that reflects the voice of people residing in the border areas between Karnataka and Kerala. Meanwhile the Chinnara Bimba, children’s drama troupe promoted by stage artiste and convenor Prakash Bhandary, in order to nurture the Kannada culture among the children of people hailing from Karnataka in the metro is commendable, he added.
Kumaraswamy also urged the Kannadigas settled in the metro to learn from the people of Kerala who hold greater love for their mother tongue Malayalam wherever they may be.
Poet Sukanya Maruthi from Dharwad presided.
Speaking on the occasion, Sukanya Maruthi said that Kannada Kairali monthly magazine has been involved in taking up the issues of people living in Karnataka and Kerala border and its editor A R Subbayyakatte deserves appreciation for providing inspirational leadership, she said.
Kerala transport minister Jose Thettiyil, chief guest, released the special edition of Kannada Kairali. Minister hoped that the annual day celebrations of Kannada Kairali in metro truly forges tied between Kannada and Malayalam, thus setting an example example for secular journalism, he said.
MLA C H Kunhambu said the Tuluvas and Kannadigas settled in metro have performed Yakshagana episodes in Hindi and regularly organize the shows across the metro. The Yakshagana also serves as a media to promote brotherhood among the diverse cultures and religions.
Vastu expert and astrologer Ashok Purohit released Divige, book authored by lawyer Thomas D’Souza and published by Kannada Kairali Publications. Metropolitan police officer Prakash B Bhandary released Dharmachavady, Tulu novel by Srinivas Alva Kalattoor while Sukanya Maruthi released Sampige Chavadiya Koodlu Mane book, authored by Vijayalaxmi Shanbagh on the occasion.
Okkaliga Sangh – Maharastra president Narayan R Gowda, Mira – Dahanu Bunts president Prakash Hegde, Mumbai Kerala Jamaat honorary secretary M M K Urmi, treasurer Aziz Maniyoor, social activist Virar Shankar Shetty, Narayan Vittal, Mahabala Samani, Radhakrishna Uliyatadka and Yakshagana promising artiste Sadashiv Shetty Bambrana were felicitated.
Kannada Kairali editorial member M Umesh Salian welcomed the gathering. Advisor S Jagannath Shetty delivered the introductory address. Kannada Kairali monthly editor A R Subbayyakatte and South Indian Cultural Co-ordination Committee convenor Ratnakar Matti honoured the dignitaries with the flower bouquets.
Kannada Kairali executive editor Ravi Naikapu proposed the vote of thanks. Professor Ratnakar Mallamule and Arusha N Shetty compered the programme.
Kala Jagattu – Chinnara Bimba children’s play troupe staged cultural programmes. Kebi Pittale, Tulu comedy play directed by Telikeda Bolli famed Devdas Kapikad was staged by his troupe Cha Parka from Mangalore.
