Sullia: Constable who assaulted Subramanya temple priest suspended

Sullia, Mar 29: Hours after news of a police constable allegedly assaulting priest of Kukke Adi Subramanya Temple was reported, the police department took action against the accused cop.

The cop, Shankar, attached to Subramanya police, was suspended from duty on the evening of Sunday March 29.

As reported earlier, Srinivas, the priest, was on his way to the temple to offer evening puja when Shankar stopped him and demanded to know where he was going while the town was under lockdown. The priest told him that he was going to offer puja, but the constable refused to listen and allegedly beat him up with his lathi.

A complaint in this regard was filed by Vipra Parivar organization, urging the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police to take action against the cop.

The Bantwal sub-divisional police looked into the matter and submitted a report to the police department. As prima facie Shankar was found to have misbehaved with the priest, Dakshina Kannada district police department decided to suspend the cop pending investigation.

    Decision of suspension is highly appreciated. But question is why in only one case. CM's constitution, one persons death occurred due to police lati attack as mention in major news channels. Dear Respectable Home Minister, All people are afraid thinking how to feed family as storage items may not be sufficient enough. In such, your respected police are behind the human and attack them as their father's property. while watching number of circulated video clips of police acrocity and brutality, think it is as per your own order, or you may be blind. Now you don't want AAM Aadmi for next 4 years. If you have some sympathy towards your volters, please issue stricts order to stop violence in the name of COVID19 by law enforcement people. And suspend all those so far involved in lati charge.

    This is double standard of Department... So many poor & Innocent people were assaulted by Police who came outside for food. But no action is taken by Govt. Or Department... But in this case within few hours cop is suspended..!?

    As per the reports, Temple Priest was alone going to offer the Pooja, Not in a group. The Police action in this case not acceptable. Better the Dept. control these type of Police Personel.

    Few temples daily pooja is a must, here only a single priest is allowed to go and do pooja, public is not allowed to join due to social distancing and ban. It was wrong on part of police to act in such manner, the priest didn't assemble people, he was all alone, he was permitted by authorities to do daily puja... I think sp has done the right thing.....i have heard payer offered in empty churches by head priest in few churches...thats not wrong. Don't assemble people, for that there is restrictions.

    1. Apart from those covered under essential services act, none are permitted to defy the lock-down rules. It's more stricter than emergency!
    2. Police are deployed only to enforce the law, amidst putting their own lives at grave risk. This make them little frustrated.
    3. Places of worship generally draw crowds, putting people at large at greater risks of infections.
    4. Therefore their administrators have to be even more responsible in public interest.
    5. Having said that, it's quite difficult for devout to break their routine habit all of sudden but they have to raise to the occasion and restrain themselves.
    6. At times it might become very difficult for the police to deal with law breakers, Police excesses are not uncommon, but all are NOT criminals, little MILD deterrent action would have been better!

    Poor people who walked for 40 kms to get back home are beaten mercilessly by the police. So, do we also suspend all of them?

    Police risk their life by being on the roads and streets to protect us, let us not be arrogant saying we are going to pray or offer sacrifices to god. We know how communal pressure made the department to act to appease those who wanted action.

    He was doing his duty as the law is equal to everyone, unless it is essential service personnel.
    Now the constable will sit at home, far from fearing the corona virus.

    Why this guy cannot follow Govt orders. The police was doing his duty. He should not be suspended because of this guy . Recently I had seen police hitting a old man who went to pray in a Mosque. Different communities have different rules?

    It is sad to see several people being beaten savagely by the Police all over India just because they move out. Except for a few people who may go out for fun, majority are people who move around to buy groceries or medicines or to visit a doctor or a sick relative or friend or some are stranded on the way. The reasons can be many.

    Beating people in such a savage manner as if they are criminals shows what we have achieved from the colonial rule of the British since Independence. The British used to beat our ancestors in this manner and now it is our very own people who do that. The police are from our own Indian society and behave like our colonial masters punching and kicking and raining blows. There are humane ways to warn people or fine them for disobeying the law but beating the people is not acceptable. The Police should be held accountable for their savage acts.

    This particular temples comes under the administration of Dharmika Datthi Ilake or Endowment. Automatically it means, that it is managed by government. Alternatively speaking, this priest is a government employee. Again as per the notification by state government just a week ago, only priests of any religious institutions are permitted be it in respective religious institutions, be it either Temple, Church or Mosque. As per that notification, no devotees are permitted inside in the wake of present scenario. Now this cop is also a government employee, & he has not only obstructed other government employee in discharging his duties, but has manhandled & caused serious injuries. Naturally he will be attracting suspension order as he has override the orders of the another department of the government. Anyway you count, it is impossible for him to defend his actions & he has to face the consequences for his wrongdoings.

    Police used to lathi against people who were offering prayers in a mosque in belgaum which is justified, but now the same police department did take action against its colleague for the assault as they should have taken action there also why is there a discrimination then.

    Punishing PC does not help...Change that 1885 Police manual...and remove Cane from Policemen's hand...In riot like situation provide Guns for Self defense...

    Even better let Police wear body camera while in duty like in US...so they behave in Civilized manner...
