MP Shobha Karandlaje slams Tablighis, calls them 'corona jehadis'

Bengaluru, Apr 4 (IANS): Alarmed over the growing number of Tablighi Jamaat returnees testing COVID-19 positive, Shobha Karandlaje, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Karnataka, on Saturday accused them of spreading coronavirus across the country.

"Several Tablighi Jamaat members who attended a congregation at the Nizamuddin Markhaz in Delhi in March fled to other parts of the country, carrying and spreading coronavirus. Many have tested positive," Karandlaje said at Chikkamagaluru, about 250 km from here.

Of the hundreds of Tablighis who attended the 3-day event on March 13-15, as many as 600, including around 250 from Karnataka, have tested positive and been quarantined.

Terming the Tablighis as 'corona jehadis' for staying put at their centre and not reporting to authorities for testing, the BJP lawmaker said one community was not cooperating with the government in fighting the pandemic.

"Some of the community members attacked women health workers in Bengaluru's northern suburb on April 2 when they went to check if Tablighi returnees had taken the test," she said.

Of the 391 Tablighi returnees, around 200 were tested. 13 of them have tested positive and the remaining 187 negative.

One of the returnees, however, died early this week at Sira in the Tumakuru district, about 70 km northwest from here.

Five members of the community were arrested for allegedly assaulting health workers, under the mistaken identity that they were enumerators for the National Register of Census (NRC).

I am thankful and grateful to all commentors who wrote against the idea of giving religious colour to the pandemic also.
These people who segregate people on the basis of community do not understand that it may backfire on them if that community get apprehended because of hate mongers and do not come forward for the Covid testing.

There is only one way of controlling corona virus. Declare an emergency, involve the armed forces (with special powers) to implement orders regarding lock-down,quarantine etc. Otherwise those who are out to harm the people of this country will have a field day.

I have two questions to all those who are tumbling over one another to condemn Ms. Karandlaje. (1) What is your response to the points she has highlighted? (2) Why most of the members of this so called tablij are still in hiding despite repeated instructions from the authorities, to present themselves for the necessary medical check-up?

The virus does not discriminate, why do you? DO NOT DISCRIMINATE. We are all Indians....... This is one of the messages that appears in the CPVOD 19 India tracker. it is very shameful that being a Senior Politician you are passing such discriminating comments. Why did the police not act and why did the govt. give permission in the first place to conduct this massive gathering, when it was well aware that Corona virus is spreading like wild fire. No point accusing and causing rift between religions

As all faith people were worried from December itself then why your government given permission to hold Tablighi event and Visa for foreign visitors ? I am sure you have PM and HM mobile numbers call them directly and ask them why they give permission and give a press statement so we all know the reason.

Most of the sensible Muslims find fault with Tablighis on this issue. Administration may have erred but the situation to bring NSA to venue and requesting them to cooperate with local administration else face drastic consequences could have been avoided. But here the issue is ministers more loyal than the King himself....?

Being a Muslim I feel tablige Jamaat people were highly irresponsible and and should have used their mind instead of misrepresenting religion . MOst of the Muslims do condemn the irresponsible act . Having said that govt has to be blamed for allowing such a huge gathering that too in national capital . If govt and media tells us day to day update of Pakistan , then why didn’t they know of huge gathering? And who issued visas to foreigners?? Let’s ignore these politicians and behave like responsible citizens and take a lesson from this episode .

There is no use blaming one community for Tablighi incident for spread of the virus.
There have been multiple gatherings all over India like UP, Ayodhya, West Bengal and so on. You simply cannot single out one particular community and blame them.
This is not the time for communal politics but to fight against the virus unitedly.

We live India...It's our duty and fundamental right to safeguard our family and fellow person. In this time of crisis we all must show our unity as Indians. It could be a premature statement to call Tablighis as Jehadis unless inquiry proves them . If they are guilty of spreading the infection , then no excuse will be given. But if they are genuinely innocent, it will be a big blunder. Shobhakka, please keep silence, no politics in our bad time, as an MP ,you never mentioned any relief/ reconstructive programs.
