Mangalore, Dec 15: A group of women from Kulshekar parish protested near a bakery situated on the church compound, whose owner is accused of attacking a woman and demanded his immediate arrest on Monday December 14.
The protest was against the attack on Mariet Pinto, a parish council member, who went to buy milk on Monday morning.
She was allegedly beaten up by Clifford D’Souza, owner of the bakery. The woman has filed a complaint in Kadri police station and the police have registered a case.
The women demanded the immediate arrest of Clifford and strict action against him.
One of the protesters, Pauline D’Souza, said that the attack on a woman shows he has no respect for society. “The attack is not only illegal but also anti-religious”, she added.
“If strict action taken is not taken against the accused, such attacks will continue on other women in the parish”, she said adding that the incident is a shame to society. Protesters held placards demanding the arrest of the accused.
Police said that the first information report (FIR) based on the complaint given by Mariet has been registered and they are conducting an investigation.
Mariet was admitted to the hospital after she was found with injuries sustained in the attack.
The attack followed misunderstanding in a matter related to the issuing of a pamphlet against the Church parish council as the victim refused to receive the same, said sources.
