Udupi: Miscreants Damage Newly Bulit St Antony’s Grotto at Kolalagiri

Udupi: Miscreants Damage Newly Bulit St Antony’s Grotto at Kolalagiri
by Kevin Rodrigues
Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Dec 15: The thick glass shield provided to the newly built grotto of St Antony, located in the compound of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Kolagiri near Kallianpur in the district, was found to have been shattered by miscreants on the morning of Tuesday December 15. It is thought that the mischief mongers had thrown stones at the grotto.

In the church, falling under Kallainpur Varado, a four-day ‘Good shepherd’s Prayer Meet’ has been going on since December 13. The participants had left after the meet on Monday December 14, at 7.30 pm.

In the early morning, a man named Ashwin from this parish, who had approached the grotto to offer flowers, saw glass splinters scattered on the ground. This grotto had been built with the help of the donors, and inaugurated recently.

Parish priest, Fr Jerome Monteiro, said that unidentified miscreants had damaged the grotto. Superintendent of police Pravin Madhukar Pawar, DySP Jayant Shetty, Brahmavar circle inspector Krishamurty and others visited the spot and gathered information from the local people. Congress leader, Veronica Carnelio, was present.

The policemen have registered a case and expressed confidence about bringing the culprits involved to book.

As a Kolalgiri(Aroor) residence from more than 40 years and knowing the place very well, i can strongly say that it is just a miscreant act. Kolalgiri is a very nice place to live and all Hindus and other religion people were living here in total harmony and peace from many years. What happened is very sad. But please do not communalise or politilize the issue and let us once again we live peacefully and happily in this place. May god forgive who had done this mischief and irresponsible jog and Almighty enlighten him with more intelligence and wisdom to understand the value and importance of places.

Instead of spending money & rebuilding grottos, why don,t the parishioners spend the same money on a poor family in the parish to educate & help them. These people's blesings is more valuable & everlasting compared to building statues, buildings etc which is time bound.

These kind of incidents happen and are deplored by society but the sad fact is that within this very society also live illiterate and gullible people who get carried away with speeches made by apparent saviors of the land who only help in creating divide and hatred between communities. Alas we only realize when its too late.I feel only a deranged person can worship one religion and at the same time harm another religion.

Dear Mr. Eric Coelho, Mangalore, don’t you think that you should allow the credit to go to the donors and faithful who have donated money to build the statue since you have not given any charity for the cause. Today these mischief mongers have shattered the grotto of St. Antony and tomorrow they will force in their way to our churches/houses and try to harm your dear and near ones because statues are inside the churches/houses. Please ask a solution for this with your supporter Mr. Nagesh Nayak, Bangalore and come back.

Gone are the days when devotees interceded saints to protect them from dangers! Now the Saints seem to be asking people to protect them! Why blame BJP, Congress or anyone when we have failed to restrict our own black sheep? Though the prevailing situation makes us easy to find fault with political parties and their chelas, let us not forget that we have enough people within our community who know how and when to take advantage of the situation. An incident that took place some months ago near Mangalore is a nice example. We can brush it off saying it is just a stray incident. But bottomline is that our clergy and laity leaders who feel comfortable hanging on to each other's garbs, often give enough reasons for at least a handful of people to have grouse. Leaving aside this, why can't we spend some money to provide the church premises with ample security? We spend crores on marble floors and sandlewood doors and a few lac on presbyteries. But fail to secure the building or appoint on security guard. While the critics can always argue as what one security guard can offer, let us not forget that his presence can make a lot of difference. We have locked up God within the church in such a manner that it becomes extremely difficult for Him to come out or shout for help when He is attacked!! Sad that when we enjoy a secure sleep inside our houses, our God has been exposed o attacks. He sent His Son 2000 years to rescue us but we don't have one security guard to protect Him now!

This is conduct disorder, the child destroys the property of others, rather than destroying his/her own property. Deceitfulness - This involves a pattern of breaking rules by lying or stealing from others. These problems are referred to a psychologist by the juvenile justice system, usually as a condition of probation, after commiting a serious crime. However, a large percentage continue to show evidence of antisocial behavior into adulthood, with some developing into antisocial personality disorders. Such individuals usually have lifelong social adjustment problems, with frequent arrests and periods of incarceration. St. Antony pray for us.

Last time, just before the first day of the session a church at blore was attacked, before that communal violence in Mysore that too when the session was on, this time in Udupi again when the session was on. And each and every time the opposition made a big issue of it. Is there a design behind these activities to gain politically?

There is no point in commenting on Anti Social elements as they receive upper hand because of our weak laws. I would like to comment on these ideas of building statues at open places. We have a place of worship "The Church" which has enough statues inside. Building a statue in Open Place outside church does not make any sense but it makes one sense to me "WASTE OF MONEY". There is so much to be done in the said parish and the funds can be used for medical, education, housing of poor and downtrodden catholics in the parish. Taking care of our parishioners will receive more blessing from God than building these statues. It is time to bring a change in our mind set.

You may mock and scorn at us for these statements but dear bretern, remember time and tide waits for no man. It is high time that you turn away from your sinful acts and return to the Almighty. Jesus words still linger " Forgive them for they know not what they do". Let us not curse them, but, pray to Jesus to give them sense & understanding. They are strayed. Remember Lord Jesus forgave the Jews who bruised Him, crucified Him & brutally killed Him. We, His followers, Christians, peace loving community also should follow His teachings. Jesus has sent us as sheeps among wolves, but, we are not discouraged by the cowardly acts of senseless wolves who attack in the dark. More they trouble us, stronger our faith grows. More they try to scatter us, more we unite. Christianity is like Bamboo shoots - cut one bamboo and more shoots will spring. Jesus never fails !! Our religion is built on the most precious blood of Jesus, the Martyrs and Saints. It is stronger than rock. May Jesus be born in every heart during this Advent season. "MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL" !!

When a child turns out to be miscreant, is the child brings good name to the parents. Similarly whoever indulged in type of heinous act is that person brings laurels to his own religion and community. In what way they are creating the image of their religion to the society and outside world. It is disgusting to hear the continuation of this type of vandalizing churches and religious places. Giving deaf hear to these type of action will create doubt about government either they are patronizing it or they are impotent to take action.

"Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the person who strikes you on one cheek, offer the other as well…. Love your enemies and do good to them… then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful

What they got by destroying places of worship? It reinforces the faith of faithfuls. One can destroy and vandalise the material object of faiths but cant destroy the spiritual subjective faith. My christian brothers/sisters dont be carried away by emotions. You are stronger in faith. The people who destroyed are faithless people and dont have belief in God. May Lord forgive them and enlighten them.
