Mangalore, Dec 23: Here’s a lady, who has a first to her credit in painting arena. Shobha Bhaskarn basically a drawing teacher uses hard colour pencils to bring her imagination alive in canvas.
For the first time ever by an artiste, her 30 artworks brought out through the medium of hard pencils are being exhibited in a solo exhibition, Sinchana at Prasad Art Gallery here. Further the exhibition is named after one of her relatives, a girl in standard IX, who lost her parents at a tender age of 5, father in an accident and mother due to breast cancer, as a tribute.
Shobha informs that on the day of inauguration she divulged the reason behind the name of the exhibition to the guests who were touched by the gesture. She also considers that naming her works after the girl brings her good luck.
Earlier, at the same venue, Shobha displayed paintings using water colours in her first exhibition. However this time around she has chosen hard colour pencils normally used by children in the initial years of learning the art of painting.
There are artworks depicting landscape, women, flowers apart from few imitations. Shobha basically from Kasargod is now settled in Ranipura near Kuttar here. “I have spent nearly six days for an artwork putting five hours of daily work. The idea behind the exhibition is that beautiful artworks can be created using hard colour pencils,” she said.
For the heights she has reached today, it is surprising to know that Shobha had no keen interest in drawing when she was a young child. It was elder sister, Nalini Kaje, who inspired her to do her diploma through drawing master course. Nalini Kaje too is a drawing teacher and acclaimed artist herself. Apart from a painter, Shobha has a great interest in singing and has sung in orchestras as a hobby.
Being a drawing teacher in Badriya School in city, Shoba is also involved in various organizations set up for women including Lioness Club. She is also the president of District Drawing Teachers’ Association. She adds that women have to be recognized through such organizations to expose their skills and strengths.
The art exhibition was inaugurated on Saturday December 19 and will continue for a week at Prasad Art Gallery in Ballalbagh.
