US body accuses India of violating religious freedoms, India calls it biased

By Aarti Tikoo Singh

New Delhi, Apr 29 (IANS): The government on Tuesday strongly lambasted the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), for placing India among the list of countries which violate religious freedoms.

The USCIRF has designated India as a 'Country of Particular Concern' on religious freedom along side Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, North Korea, China, Russia and others.

The 14 countries placed in the list of ‘Particular Concern', according to the USCIRF are whose governments engage in or tolerate systematic, ongoing, egregious violations of religious freedom.

The USCIRF is an independent federal government entity set up by the US Congress to monitor and report on religious freedom in the world. "We are seeing impunity for violence by non-state actors committed against religious minorities," USCIRF chair Tony Perkins said about India.

Reacting sharply to the US government panel's move, ministry of external affairs spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said: "We reject the observations on India in the USCIRF annual report."

Describing the USCIRF's comments against India, "biased and tendentious" and "not new", the spokesperson said, "But on this occasion, its misrepresentation has reached new levels. It has not been able to carry its own Commissioners in its endeavour."

The government said that it regards it as "an organization of particular concern and will treat it accordingly."

Several International bodies have been monitoring India about its religious intolerance with the minorities. But the govt keeps denying since it played a crucial role in keeping silent by giving the fringe elements a free hand to damage the reputation of the country. BJP has completely failed in maintaining law & order while on the other hand its elected ministers are making nonsensical statements which are ridiculed and criticized across the globe.

Gujarat has rightfully banned loudspeakers. State government's order is very much clear that use of anything that can cause gathering of people is prohibited. The loudspeaker is one of them.
Just allow sound boxes attached to the walls of religious structures at a height of 6' or 7' (6 or 7 feet) and should permanently ban horns on top of the structures. Don't disturb the public in the name of religious freedom.
Ring the church bells too within the structures.
At least, India can be an example of tolerance and discipline irrespective of religion.
We do not need approval from America for this, please.
People have watches these days. We would not have wasted 1 crore and few more lakhs Rupees to wall clock tower near town hall, as if we have no watches.
Why can't the political parties protest against this looting of public money?

While we all vouch for religious freedom and togetherness of all religions in India....in reality, we all know that money and power speaks much higher than religious freedom in India. Religious freedom is only visible between people of the same standings in the community, they all get along well. But when someone of more power enters that circle, the religious freedom disappears.
