TN reports 508 Covid-19 cases, tally rises to 4,058


Chennai, May 5 (IANS): For second straight day the number of persons testing Covid-19 positive in Tamil Nadu crossed 500, raising the number of infected persons to 4,058 on Tuesday.

Two Covid-19 patients also died, taking the state's toll to 33. The number of active cases in the state is 2,537.

The Health Department said a large number of new infections were linked to the Koyambedu wholesale market. 508 people, including a transgender, tested coronavirus positive in Tamil Nadu over the past 24 hours, it said.

The department said 76 Covid-19 patients got cured and were discharged from various hospitals taking the number of cured people to 1,485. Over the past 24 hours, 11,858 samples were tested.

The state capital continued to see the highest number of infections at 279, followed by Cuddalore (68), Chengalpattu and Kallakuruchi (38 each), Villupuram (25) and others.

The number of infected children -- in the age group 0-12 years -- went up to 213.

There are 711 containment zones in the state. With the beds in government hospitals in the Covid-19 wards filling up, colleges and other halls converted into temporary wards have been attached to them.

The state government has appointed officers to bring Tamilians stuck in other states back to Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, with salons not allowed to open, barbers in the Tambaram locality staged a protest by cutting hair of some persons on roads.
