Mangalore, Jan 9: Nagesh Kumar, district secretary of Samudaya, state’s amateur theatre movement, passed away following a cardiac arrest on Saturday January 9.    

Kumar (49) was one of the prominent leaders of leftist organizations. He was admitted to a private hospital in the city on the night of Friday January 8 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home. His body has been shifted from hospital to his home in Kuttar near Ullal for funeral. He is survived by wife and two children.

His association with Samudaya spanned over three decades. The theatre movement under his leadership conducted several jathas and street plays creating awareness among public all over the district on various issues pertaining to the poor and labour class. 

As per his will, Kumar’s eyes were donated. He is one of the founder members of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) in the region and dedicated his life for the communist movement in the district. He led from the front the various protests organized supporting pro-poor and labour issues including opposing anti-poor policies of the government. He also served as regional secretary of Life Insurance Corporation Workers’ Union.
