Mangalore: Murder Alleged - Sowmya’s Death in Ghana Gains Twist
Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (RS/SB)

Mangalore, Jan 11: Padavinangady native Sowmya’s death in Ghana, West Africa touted as a suicide has gained sudden twist with family suspecting the incident to be a murder. Her body was brought to city on Monday January 11.

Sowmya, who had left to Ghana in West Africa after her marriage to Prem had allegedly shot herself in a farm house on December 28, 2009. She had married Prem on December 31, 2008. However, in a curious twist to the whole incident, Sowmya’s parents now suspect her to have been murdered by husband after harassing for dowry.

Prem’s family, who had visited Sowmya’s parents, informed that she had committed suicide. Following the information Sowmya’s father Achyuth Poojary tried contacting his son-in-law and failed to do so. Further, all the calls to Prem and Sowmya’s number were barred which raised suspicion. It is further shocking that Sowmya’s husband has chosen to stay back in Africa instead of accompanying his wife’s body.

Relatives of the victim alleged that it is clearly a case of dowry harassment as she had been tortured during her brief stay at her in-laws’ place before she left to Africa. Soumya during conversations over the phone from Africa too had informed here parents that her husband harassed and physically tortured her for dowry, they alleged.

Meanwhile, neither Prem’s family nor relatives were present at the time of the postmortem at District Wenlock Hospital mortuary.

And pray to god that please give justice to Soumya.I can't ask any police or human court to give justice to soumya, coz this is all manmade, manruling country. When Soumya's parents knew that she's been harassed by socalled pati and his parents why did't they take any action? I wish it happened in USA.defenetly he would've been behind the bars already by this time.

General practice is that love marriages don't demand dowry but arranged marriages do. With an exception of a few exploitations, love marriages do work out successfully. Regardless, how many of today's parents support love marriages ? Those who restrict their daughters to arranged marriages also send off their daughters with death warrants. Liberate them to search a man of choice from approved caste/religion - there will be drastic reduction in dowry deaths. Well.. will the guardians of today's majority, who disapprove celebration of Valentines day, consent with this ? However, there has been one major blot to this - our famous Praveen Kumar.

I dont understand the mindset of people asking for dowry after marriage..!! Does these boys and families who demand for dowry should be given respect by the soceity..!! Why girls are ready to get married the persons who ask for dowry in the first place..? Cant we bring a change in this modern times..? False prestige of giving dowry shall not be encouraged by our soceity..?

Where is self acclaimed protector of Hindu girls, Mr Muthalik and his Sene and other parivar members? Why he is speechless now and burying his head under sand? We have more of hypocrites than true and honest persons. I feel sorry for Sowmya and her parents. Let the Ghanian authorities investigate and bring out the truth. Once truth comes out we can ask Muthalik and his Kapisene to go to Ghana and fight for justice. That sounds good for the time being.

The Dowry system should stop from our country in India. The people get married not because of love, but because of the money. The real value and meaning of matrimony now a days not seen. Selfishness, greediness has been increasing. Let us reflect our married life and give good example to our children and society. It is very strange to listen to such case. Please guys choose your partner good, caring and loving or else you will have hard time in your married life. And my suggestion before marriage all should have marriage counseling in order to have good understanding on marriage life.

My simple question to Soumya dad why did you make your daughter marry a person who is so much lust about dowry so that he can kill some one? If you are not able to pay why don't you handed over your daughter to some simple, eduacated and loving person. I am sure there are lot of such good people in your community. now you never get your daugter back. This is NRI mantra it is common everywhere... Everybody wants NRI to marry no matter how the person is.. Please don't be blind. Life is not only about money and facility.

Nothing is said about an investigation in Ghana. I feel sad for the parents of Sowmya. Indian Embassy should look into this case and get Prem repatriated to answer questions. If guilty, he should be hanged in public. And, Henry Misquith .. just for your informatioon, the criminals of this kind are beheaded in Saudi Arabia.

I am wondering how her husband forgotten the humanity? whether it was a murder or suicide he should have accompanied her body. More over it is inhuman that his family members weren't present at the time of postmortem. It is a cold blooded murder. Indian government should request Ghana for a probe.

Shocking and shameful..in India, there are laws but punishments are a mere eye wash. Such persons should be shot dead in the open without any mercy as they do in Saudi Arabia, only then others like him will be afraid of doing such a crime.

First of all may her soul rest in peace. Don't mix Ghana with South Africa. They are two different countries. Ghana is located in West Africa with Accra as its capital. Well, it is true that there is suspicion about the cause of death. Husband has not accompanied his wife's body means quite strange. Only after thorough investigation one can conclude. I have seen to what extent Indians go in order to make money. Dowry...even don't hesitate to send/sell their own wife to satisfy their bosses. Everything for dollar.

This is again another case of greed & lust for money. If the matter published happens to be true , then it is a shame on the part of Prem's family. For no reason this beautiful girl had to loose her life because of the greed of another person.God please have mercy on this girl. She fell a victim because her husband& his parents love for wealth was more that they failed to understand the value of human life.May her soul rest in peace. My heartfelt condolence to the parents of Soumya , on the loss of their Dear daughter who died in the hands of a scuplous person. God please enlighten this family.

Unless the parents of both Sowmya and Prem are not given harsh punishments, as a lesson to other parents, these things will not stop. Parents of Sowmya are more at fault in this case for not taking any action, inspite of knowing, that their daughter was being harrassed for dowry.
