Karkala, Jan 24: Thousands of residents of three villages, Belman, Sooda and Nandalike of the taluk observed a total bandh in protest against proposed land acquisition of more than 1,138 acres in the region under state government’s Suvarna Karnataka Development Corridor Programme. The government recently issued denotification order to acquire these 1,138 acres of land stretching up to Nandalike from Jantra-Belman in the taluk, following which the residents of these villages united to protest for a cause and oppose proposed the project in the area comprising large number of residential buidlings, schools, churches and temples.

On Saturday Jan 23 thousands of residents under the leadership of 'Jana Jagruti Samithi' president Seetaram Bhat, honorary president Shashidhar Shetty, secretary and former mandala chief Xavier D'Mello, comittee office-bearers Nandalike Suhas Hegde, Shankar Kundar, Ganesh Shetty and others gathered at the Belman Bus stand to against protest the Corridor project. A public meet was also organized during the day presided over by MLA Gopal Bhandary. Kemaru Sri Esha Vittaladasa Swamiji, former MLA Sunil Kumar, JD (S) district president Devi Prasad Shetty, writer Na Mogasale, zilla panchayat vice-president Santosh Kumar Shetty, advocate Mattar Ratnakar Hegde and parish priest of Belman Church Fr Lawrence D'Souza were also present.

Speaking on the occasion, Kemaru Swamiji appreciated the spirit of unity among all the three villages to oppose for a good cause. If everyone opposed the project irrespective of political party, then the question arises which party is behind the project.  I have successfully led the fight against several anti-people projects introduced by the government and today would like to added that I will stop participating in such protests in the future, if I fail this time around, he said.

MLA Gopal Bhandary alleged that state government has issued notification based on computer records and satellite survey without taking local people into confidence. He said that he has already requested Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to withdraw the notification. He was hopeful that the government would consider people's sentiments. "I am ready to even go on hunger strike opposing the project and also ready to suggest other places in the taluk wherein population, farming and activities are sparse, he said.

The state government had earlier identified 1,138 acre land in the region for industrialization without elaborating on the kind of industrialization that would be undertaken. People are now fearful that chemical-based industries will come up in the region that would threaten the environment. Under the Suvarna Karnataka Corridor Programme, the state government will offer land to private companies for developing industries.

Reliable sources have confirmed to Daijiworld that the lands in these three villages are granted to one of the relatives of the CM. If proved, the state government might face stiff opppoistion from people of the region. However, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, during his visit to Udupi last week has assured the people that the project will be withdrawn if they are not happy about it.

If at all the government gives a go ahead to the project, then the native residents of the region, who are mostly now residing in the Gulf are worried of losing their land. Many beautiful houses built recently are in danger of being demolished.

Xavier D'Mello, former Belman mandala chief and active member of protest committee said that the people are fearful of not only losing their properties, but also of losing the old world charm of the region. Further, few business houses will be forced to close down due to decreasing population of the area, if chemical industry comes up. This will also force people stay away from the area due to pollution. However, he expressed confidence that the people’s unity will work favourably resulting in saving their lands. But if the government does not respond to our request, then we will have to stage an intense protest, he warned.

It is already painful to see power project eating away the flora and fauna. This is another unwanted jolt threatening our beautiful ecosystem. We take pride in the natural beauty of South Canara and let it not be torn to pieces in the name of development. I seriously condemn this new Suvarna Karnataka project eating away the land and natural beauty when it can prove to be beneficial else where.

If the industries can't co-exist with the local inhabitants, these industries should be shifted to CMs constituency or to the Thar desert. We dont't want hazardous industries in our midst-yes, this applies to MRPL also. We are fed up of the politicians , who work hand in glove with the so-called pvt. industries in looting our Nature as well as the good health of its inhabitants.

The truth about the matter is, Congress in Goa, Communists in Bengal and BJP in Karnataka, every party wants to make money from SEZs. No use blaming the BJP alone. Right, left and centrist parties are all part of the game. JD(s) is today opposing, but would have done the same if it had been in power. Only supreme court is a ray of hope. Meanwhile, some leading people of the place can try some Gandhigiri by talking to the BJP top brass - after all most of them have come from the middle class and can understand the problems faced by the commoners - hopefully. If not, only prayer to god to give sense to thse rulers is the last resort of the people.

I Fully Agree with the Goverments Plan to Go with Industrialization Projects. We need Industries in our Village. All the Farmers and Villagers are thrown away by this dirty Politicians. Dear Villagers dont Waste Your Time By Making Such Type of Protest.nothing will work out. All Our District villagers should have a lesson, why because while poepole were protesing for the Nagarjuna/Suzlon- No nearby villagers came to help and join with them.Hence thier Protest became Weak.

However dirty ploticains came in favour of the villagers and they gained the unimagined profit and next they will join you as a symapthy.IF U WANT TO MAKE PROTEST MAKE THE PROTEST LIKE SINGUR.THEN ONLY IT WILL HELP. WE DO NOT HAVE MAMATA BANERJY IN OUR STATE. INVITE NEARBY VILLAGERS ALSO TO JOIN YOU.WHERE IS THE JAYAKRISHNA PARISARA SAMITHI ? THEY WILL COME NOW TO GAIN THEIR INDENTITY -GOOD FOR NOTHING.

I will fully agree with Mr Kamath, Udupi/Bangalore. This is way all make money and good example was thremal power plant at Nandikoor area. Inspite of huge protest, work os ongoing and most people leading protest are become rich??? Until unless all people united till the last, GOvt may use their power to acquire the land like they did at Nandikoor.

Recently all of us must have read or heard of our Karnataka Goverments intentions of acquiring land from Belman, Nandalike and Sooda for supposedly industrial development which is been home for several lakhs of people for years, there are several schools around this area been running for more than 100 years and responsible to educate millions of people, several churches, temples of unique identity of their own, including place where we have our own Kannada poet Kavi Muddana memorial, apart from all this, the land around this area is termed as an agricultural land .

It totally boggles my mind that our state goverment's decision to acquire land of such significance and turn it into an industrial area. If rumors to be believed government have plan to pay Rs.8000/cents and no value for the houses, which is again totally beyond comprehension. However, irrespective of what they offering as it really doesn’t matter to us as we in no way interested to give any of our land in the name of fake developments to some greedy ministers in power.

Why can’t government think of developing other parts of Karnataka especially where people have no access to modern amenities and other facilities that we enjoy here in D.K.? There are no proper schools, hospitals, etc. Why can’t government think of balanced development and acquire land which is vacant and free of charge, sell it to private companies to develop it? To join the protest and extend support to our people back home, we people residing outside must send our petitions to the respective local panchyat offices who I believe will forward our petitions to the responsible officer. There is also an alternative, that we send e-mails directly to CM's office expressing our protest to this decision of his government. I am not sure if they will ever read our e-mails but for sure if it goes from thousands of people it’s hard to ignore too.

Through Google search i was able to find two e-mail address of Karnataka government office Chief Minister - cheifminister@karnakata.gov.in , Minister for Rural Development & Panchayat – min-rdpr@karnataka.gov.in. Let’s do our best to save our land that we grew up in.

Good to see this protest. Now the next strategy of the corridor authorities is to bribe the people who are leading this protest. I hope the leaders do not yield to any political or financial pressures & stay till the project is withdrwan. Udupi/Mangalore are the two districts which consistently voted for BJP & the reasons for the survival of the party in Karnataka. After coming to power, they are dumping all the industries to our region. Time to teach them a lesson

Do we need these kind of development activities at the cost of the livelihood of the people. We people choose our government and look how they miss use their power. This project is not at all necessary in this region. Just for the benefit of the politicians and their relatives, these projects are initiated. Good move from the local residents be united and don't give away your land, as these corrupt politicians don't have any right to snatch our land.

My dear brothers & sister from Belman & Nandalike Please knock Supreme Court door with PIL. As per federal Govt, fertile land used for growing rice ( 3 times in a year ) should not acquire for industrial purpose. If Yeddi Govt throwing ethics for sake of personal gains, then Supreme Court only protect us.

its one of the tragic decisions , i beliese which the present state government has taken-putting devolopements before the lives of people. may be the present politicians of karnataka have forgotten the first lesson in the book of politics, that they are from the people and for the people. hope this movement would spread wide and quick. hope the locals will not give into the money minds. I would love to tell the govt.... allow the people first to live on , before your devolopements........ any way your run will not last longer... it will be your last term in the office........ but you have done the worst possible

Hope the people on the dias are honest in their protest to the agitation or else we have already seen the protest in Nandikur thermal power plant. A lot of leaders raised agitations and finally changed sides with the people left helpless and the power plant getting completed with power shortage at its worst in the area. More acquistions are still going on in the vicinity. One can never say when they will side with the land grabbers.

Why state govt is going madly for land acquisition? CM should think about establishing chemical industries in his constituency Shivamogga and feel the reaction of people. CM is not doing anything for the DK roads. He is pushing people into great deal of tension of losing their fertile farm land and ancestral property. Thousands have already lost their fertile land in DK due to these devpt projects like free zones. Politicians and govt officials have made lot of side money. Why are they still thirsty of residential areas that belong to mostly humble people? What kind of job opportunity they are talking about and jobs for whom? DK is facing shortage of working people! Only for bandh and communal unrest we have plenty of them.
