Mangalore Commissionerate Opening on Republic Day

Mangalore, Jan 25 (DHNS) : The much awaited Police Commissionerate in Mangalore will be finally realised on January 26.

Confirming this to the Deccan Herald, Home Minister V S Acharya said, “Mangalore is the most important strategic point in the State. Hence the government has decided to set up a Commissionerate here. This is the fourth Commissionerate next to Bangalore, Hubli-Dharwad and Mysore.”

The Home Minister said, “As Manglore is the western gate for all the activities in the State a Commissionerate should have been set up here much earlier. It was delayed, however, owing to various reasons and finally the government has taken up the initiative.”

It may be recalled here that the government had to announce the status of Commissionerate on August 15 but it got postponed to November 1. However, even on November 1 it remained unannounced.

The proposal for setting up of a Commissionerate in Mangalore has been on cards for the past one decade. The first proposal for the setting up of a Commissionerate was made after the communal riots in the district in 1998 and subsequently there have been demands to strengthen the police force.

New dimension

With the commencement of direct flights between Mangalore and Middle East and with the growth of New Mangalore Port into a major port, the urge for a Police Commissionerate got a new dimension. In the meantime, the growing religious intolerance and communal tensions accentuated the necessity.

In October 2006, the then Minister for Home and Parliamentary Affairs M P Prakash had stated that Mangalore would get a Commissionerate soon and in due course several ministers and police authorities had made similar statements.

Fresh proposal

In the same year, the then Additional Director General of Police K S Suresh Babu and SP B Dayanand had submitted a proposal to the government.

However, in June 2008, V S Acharya had asked the then Inspector General of Police A M Prasad to submit a fresh proposal on Commissionerate. Finally, the dream of Police Commissionerate is being realised now.
