Mumbai, Feb 1: The tenth Sharana Sahitya Sammelan underway in the metro is the confluence of all litterateurs form the length and breadth of our country, said Kannada Sahitya Parishat former president Professor G S Siddalingayya.
He was speaking at the inaugural of All India Tenth Sharana Sahitya Sammelan, at Karnataka Sangh auditorium, Mahim (West), here on Saturday January 30. “ The term Sharana in Kannada signifies ecstasy of worship, devotion to duty that is not just notions but is of human virtues. There has been an intellectual search for meanings of Basavanna’s gem of verses, which has appeal to the entire mankind and not restricted to one community. His verses has the capacity for soul searching on eradicating un-touchability, which was pursued by Basavanna during the twelfth century AD, he added.
Karnataka Sangh president Manohar M Kori and Chenna Basappa hoisted the flag to begin the programme. Navi Mumbai deputy mayor Shashikanth Bharatdar inaugurated the sammelan.
Deputy mayor Shashikanth Bharathdar, in his inaugural address, said that politics, literary and linguistic conventions are commercialized in the modern era, while the culture has not succeeded in earning a living. National unity has been threatened owing to the linguistic division of states in the country. Britishers had divided the country into greater India and Pakistan in the pre-Independence era, while the union government has formed various states based on regional languages, which poses greater concern to national unity, he said.
Bharathdar said that the doctrine of great visionary Basavanna of twelfth century is not restricted to Karnataka, it’s for all countrymen. It also significant that Maharashtra state has declared holiday on Basaveshwar Jayanti, in recognition of his contributions in reforming the society in his times, he added.
Dr B R Manjunath called on the people to follow the ideals of Shiva which was propagated by Basavanna. The humility and devotion to duty are necessary to rejuvenate the true worship in the society in the twenty first century.
Renowned stage artiste and scientist Dr B R Manjunath was also present on the dais.
Karnataka Sangh president Manohar M Kori welcomed. All India Sharana Sahitya Parishat president Goroor Chenna Basappa delivered the introductory address.
Dr K Raghunath proposed the vote of thanks. Karnataka Sangh vice-president Bharath Kumar Polipu compered the programme.
