Kalaburagi: Online education not suitable for children, can't become norm - Minister Suresh Kumar

Kalaburagi, Jun 7: Minister for primary and secondary education Suresh Kumar on Sunday June 7 clarified that the state government has not given permission for conducting online education for school students.

The minister, who arrived in the city, held a preparatory meeting in the wake of the SSLC examinations which will be held from June 25.

Suresh Kumar said, "After the coronavirus pandemic widespread, propaganda is being heard about the online education system. However, online education is not suitable for young children. Online education cannot become the main system of teaching. That is only supplementary. I do not agree with the online education system.

"It has also come to my notice that people are trying everything to get access to online education. For online education, a proper environment is required. We had written a letter to Nimhans with regard to online education. Nimhans has replied with a long letter. Once we go through the letter sent by Nimhans, we will take further action.

"Various issues have cropped out due to the coronavirus pandemic. Time table set by the education department has gone for a toss. Efforts are being made to find solutions for the issues created by the Covid-19 pandemic. Central government may also send a guidelines in this regard. We are expecting the guideline from the centre. Discussions will be held with the parents with regard to reopening of schools. Later a decision to this effect will be taken in the state cabinet before going further," he added.

"In total, 8,48,203 students are going to write the SSLC examination this year. Necessary precautions will be taken in the examinations centers. All preparations are done. Hand sanitizer and face mask will be provided to students. Safety of children and instilling confidence in them will be the first priority of the department. Transport facility will be provided to students writing examinations. Attention will also be given to the health of the students. Revision classes online will be held from June 10 to 20 for students taking the SSLC examination," he said.

    Online teaching not suitable for children....how can one child sit 4 hours continuously in front of internet rays.....now it is ok for children to use laptop or mobile???? Because usually parents don't allow to touch their laptop or phone to their child...... some poor children can't even effort to get internet package

    Online education in current form is stupidest thing I have seen. Teachers are teaching a class with same approach as they teach a regular class. In a regular class they can see each and every student. They can feel whether class is able to understand. They can see if students are getting restless. They can stop and ask some question in between. With online education they are taking same approach which ruins it. With a small screen teacher cannot see all the students. They do not get feedback. Students cannot stop the teacher as they are afraid.
    Teachers should spend time and record the class beforehand. They should let the students go through it. Once students go through recording they should take a test. They should then go online meeting with students who did not grasp the topic. This is lot of work and many teachers do not have this skill. This format can be a advance in education.
    Current online class is totally regressive step and torture for all parties involved.

    Sir is there any safety for government teachers whose age are above 58 or 59??
    Teachers are asked to attend school from today daily?!!
    Please ensure safety of aged teachers also who have to travel and also be with children’s.Daily they are traveling and going to school using public transport from today.

    Please take safety of both teachers and children’s.

    During tenth sslc exam both teachers and children’s safety is must.

    If Technology is an enabler for Online education you should be looking at how to leverage and enable .Agreed that a classroom environment is required for all round development of the child but in the current situation, opneing schools in Not an option. The government should be figuring out how to control the spread and not start opening when the cases are increasing and going out of control. Lockdown Plan and, Strategy and Outcome has been a failure. Financial package ,proposals and outlook is an eyewash. While Nimhans / Govt. can give suggestions ,they are Not the deciding or competent authority to make such decisions . Its quite apparent that they Do Not have Public interest in mind.. and intention now is how to generate revenue and make money and take us for a jolly ride

    On line education is not advisable in our country. Many working parents how can they monitor their children studies. Fear of teacher and discipline is the main reason for class room education required. India is a poor country. Poor class family cannot afford to provide sophisticated system to their children. Without school friends and physical activities our children will become vegetable. Delaying school until September is a good solution in this difficult time. Portion can be covered with the extra classes and reducing holidays. COVID-19 has changed our life and style of living. We have to learn how to live in this condition. COVID-19 will remain for a long time unless and until we get vaccine for this. Parents do not encourage online studies if you want your children's growth. We cannot control our children misusing the computers and mobile system.

    Online education on long term basis may not be suitable for young children, in a normal situation. Here we are in an abnormal and challenging situation and having class room studies is risking the health and safety of our children which can lead to fatal incidents. Now the Ministers main concern should be 1) in the current situation when the cases of COVID-19 keeps increasing having class room studies is safe enough. 2) When the experts have evaluated and come up with their report and guidelines, 3) discuss with school management and parents. Just because online education is not suitable for young children or not convenient to the school management , do not start the schools. Instead find out alternate ways of teaching and slim down the portions.

    So far as I can see, Nimhans has no role to play (= not authorised by law) on primary/secondary school education in any manner/capacity.

    I guess someone has misled the minister into thinking that Nimhans has the authority for developing school/education policy.

    Educating children is the responsibility of the parents.

    Minister's role is to ensure that the state provides the necessary support where needed. Here the minister could be worried about the potential loss of revenues.

    But it is up to the parents how children receive their education.

    Sir,
    Online education is going to be the next big thing in the education sector. As far as your comment that it's not suitable for "young children" , I think you are giving a statement under some pressure. If you have had a look at the apos that are providing education like byju's and other apps they make learning do interesting. Maths is taught to kids in the form of games and graphical Stories.
    Kids tend to understand and remember more as to what they see than what they hear. As a education minister you need to embrace this technology. Unfortunate that you don't understand the importance technology.
    Also do ask the parents and kids what they feel about the education given online rather than getting one sided opinion from NIMHANS alone

    schools r not must for education , homeschooling with parents or online classes can work in this pandemic .. For poor children who cant afford smart phone , laptop , or data plan , govt has to hire home tutors region wise.

    pros : schools feels chronic capitalism can be checked
    as studies r done from home , parents can be vigilante .
