Rahul Whirlwind Sweeps Mumbai - and Shiv Sena Threats

Mumbai, Feb 5 (IANS) He came, he saw and conquered Shiv Sena's turf Mumbai. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's whirlwind four-hour visit saw him pulling out money from an ATM, boarding crowded local trains and generating a massive swell of goodwill that swept away the Sena's threats.

Despite sporadic attempts by Sena activists to create hurdles by waving black flags, staging noisy demonstrations and burning Rahul Gandhi's effigies for his comments on Mumbai belonging to all Indians, the Congress general secretary's trip passed off without any untoward incident.

Maximising on the tremendous response to his trip, Rahul Gandhi even attempted something no other national leader of his stature has done in the recent past - travel on two suburban trains along with members of the general public.

He brushed aside security concerns - and his waiting helicopter - at the last minute to zoom off to Andheri to board a Virar-Dadar fast local and got off at Dadar station at 1.17 pm.

Prior to that, like any law-abiding citizen, Rahul Gandhi checked his pockets for some change. Not finding any, he withdrew cash from an ATM near the Andheri station.

The Congress general secretary then stood in queue to buy a ticket and then boarded a Western Railway (WR) local.

Thousands of commuters were pleasantly surprised and even taken aback to see the VVIP in their modest midst. Many jostled to get close to Rahul Gandhi or shake hands with him, giving his security personnel a tough time.

Ditto at Dadar from where he took the stairs over a foot overbridge to catch a slow Central Railway (CR) local train to go to Ghatkopar for his next engagement.

At Dadar and Ghatkopar, he was virtually mobbed by the people trying to catch a glimpse of the leader who had challenged the Shiv Sena with his comments on on the role of north Indians in protecting Mumbai during the 26/11 terror attacks.

On both trips, Rahul Gandhi was also accompanied by Mumbai Police Commissioner D. Shivanandhan and Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Rakesh Maria.

From Ghatkopar, he drove straight to the Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar slums, halting at a large statue of B.R. Ambedkar. There he removed his footwear, garlanded the statue and respectfully bowed in homage to the father of the Indian constitution.

Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and others had sweated it out in the heat below a tree, awaiting Rahul Gandhi for over an hour-and-a-half. After all, the leader was scheduled to take a helicopter, not travel on local trains.

It was a political triumph for Rahul Gandhi in the Shiv Sena's own turf.

An elderly Dalit woman, almost in her 80s and barely able to walk, told waiting mediapersons that she had mustered up the energy only to see Rahul ?beta'.

At the Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar slums, Rahul Gandhi halted in his tracks often to speak to local people, sign autographs and instantly win friends.

Said a 21-year-old college student Lata Sagame: "It is the first time that somebody big like Rahul Gandhi has tried to understand the problems of the people of Mumbai. None of the Shiv Sena leaders have ever travelled in local trains."

A peeved Sena sought to downplay the response of the visit and termed it a drama that had inconvenienced train commuters.

Sena spokesperson Neelam Gorhe told television channels that if he was so concerned about the common man, why could he not walk down from Juhu Airport to Bhaidas Auditorium, a distance of barely a kilometre.

Rahul Gandhi had arrived at around 11 a.m. to a virtual curfew like atmosphere with police on guard to ward off trouble in the face of the Sena's directives to its activists to greet him with black flags on grounds that he had "insulted" Marathi people and Maharashtra.

It was a very different atmosphere when he left a few hours later for Puducherry.

I agree what Rahul Gandhi did was a stunt. He replied with actions not words. Shiv Sena is very similar to Rama Sena, Bajrang Dal and VHP. These are all communal parties with only HATE agenda. These parties can never talk about development and god forbid if they come to power they will take India backwards. Shiv Sena always felt that Mumbai was their father’s property and could hold any one to ransom at the of a hat.

This party has never done any thing productive for the Mumbai except for beating up innocent people and extorting money from film starts and businessmen. Similar instances have occurred in Mangalore too but the ruling party in Karnataka is very weak and does not have any will on intentions to control such rogues.

Friends, I spent too long time reading all the coments in this article. Come on friends dont get too much exited on the show. Even I am one of the fans of Rahul. But what he did in the present situation is just a political show to take undue advantage of the situation. All this was started with Sharuk's coments on exclusion of Pakistan' players which Shiv senas resisted.Entire nation knows the fact that India is not playing cricket with Pak becuase of un healthy relationship.

All Indians could have accepted that it has been difficult to win justice against terrsost attacks happend on Mumbai which belong to all Indians. We could not see Rahul Gandhi or Sharuk on the roads. Only Marathi Police and |Mumbia people lost thier lives. Shame to all of us who are calling Rahul bravo bravo!!! please stop it and understand the dirty politicas of today.

One thing that I am not able to understand is why did the congress/NCP ruling in Maharashtra did not take any action against MNS/SS jokers. For that matter why did Rahul Gandhi the general secretary of the congress party admonish the CM Ashok Chavan who was also from congress for letting this hooligans conduct their drama for so long. The MNS hooligans openly hit taxi drivers and Raj Thackeray was arrested for just 3 hrs. Now Rahul Gandhi roams around in Mumbai for 4 hours and media goes gungho. Can anyone tell me what concrete action has been taken against those creating trouble by the ruling party of Maharashtra????

I would like to mention two issues on this article. 1. sentences like "Withdraw cash from an ATM, Stood in queue to buy a ticket, boarded western local train" Whether these are the such big news for indian people it should be published in all media.

No other important news are not there. It looks very clear Rahul does all this things for the get media hip. nothing else. I think media should understand themselves and try to avoid these kind of news and by that media and general public can save their valuable time and use for some productive purpose. 2.) Rahul visited Ramabai Ambedkar Naga Slums. I think Rahul should shame on this issue. First he should think after 63 years our independent, why slums are there in one of the oldest city of india. out of 63 years most of the time Neharu Gandhi Family ruled the country.

If his family not able solve the one city slum problem what we can expect from them to the country. He should understand that whatever slums are there in mumbai, all because of failure of governments who ruled india. Rahuls family takes bigger role in that. I seen one more news just before arrival rahul to mumbai that All the roads, slum areas, trains are equipped with new security cameras and Mumbai police already done dummy rehearsal of the rahul visit to get ready for the situation. Rahul done only those thinks which script writer already given to him. Final request – don’t waste general public time. They have lot of work.

Now this proves that the ruling party in Mumbai(congress) is capable of keeping Shiv Sena at bay when the situation demands, but remains a mute spectator when Shiv Sena attacks the rest in Mumbai. Rahul set an example of aam aadmi, but are they not aam aadmies who fall to the victim of Shiv Sena's atrocities?

Moreover, news reports did not mention anything about inconvenience to the common man. Infact, people like the 80 year old lady came to see him. That means he is approachable unlike other politicians. If any inconvenience was caused, it is bcause the sena supporters tried their best to do so. India needs a young brave heart to put all things in perspective. While Rahuls venture may be politically correct, the persona displayed by Rahul reqiures great credit to see , to feel, to experience the toiling of a common man through living in a great city like Mumbai. Indias financial center and feeder to millions, anyone, even a pauper can make his ends meet no matter wheere one lives- in slums or sky scrappers. The notion Mumbai belongs to Marathi manoos may be right but for vast Indians, Mumbai is Amchi Mumbai. Even a marathi manoos would agree Mumbai is Mumbai because all Indians have made it including Marathis. Rahul must lead the young, transform the young, include the young in his politcal life to lead and show the real India to all. Our older politicians must guide the young man, a young man should be at the helm because the young India is ready to shape India into a giant of the future.

Leaders are born and they are not made. Fundamentalists and whole of saffron brigade is scared of the raising popularity of this politican icon. Any one of the three Thackerys dare not move of their safe den. The aged and acaged oldman roars. But people should know that what he is doing now is for the sole benefit of his own family and his progeny. He has no agenda of state welfare, forget about the national welfare and its integretiy. Shiva sena could not form its government on its own in Maharashtra. Any one who talks about national unity, integrety, equality and secularism is true Indian and the party doesnt matter at all. Those who oppose these ideologies are our country's inborn enemies. Patriotism lies in uniting people and not deviding them. Now its high time that saffron brigade conduct a soul search and overhaul its ideologies to suit the ground realities. Or else very soon they will disappear from national politics and shall be reduced to regional politics. No civilized citizen, no true patriot likes the destruction of his country. Majority of Indians love peace and stability, security, fearless atmosphere, freedom to preach and practice, growth and prosperity. Growth and prosperity can only be achieved by peace and stable proactive government who rules by law without fear or favour, talks about oneness of India and treats its citizens equally irrespective of his faith and ideologies. Those who devide and hate cannnot govern. Bravo Rahul. Keep it up. Good luck.

Even the stamina he has mustered to travel like a common man itself shows that it is likely that he has adopted himself to that kind of life, which otherwise for a public-stunt who have left him sweathing and breathless like his other leaders who accompanied him.

A very good stupid stunt by Rahul Gandhi to Mumbaikars. It is foolish to think that public belives in these type of stunts. Question arises as will he keep this type of attitute of 'standing in que of tikets', 'travelling in trains', etc. forever or only as gimmick.

Travelling in train or waiving hands doesn't lift up the image of a person. Only blind lovers feal it good & views as a great achievement by puppet maharastra govt. Better Rahul Gandhi join any bollywood movie & he may have the chances of winning few of trophies. AND terming 'he came...he conquered' is purely a false statement as he is yet to grow OR still just a child in politics.

Jai Ho Rahul Gandhi your Grand Mother has taken tough descion to keep our country united and at last she paid for her patriotism by giving her life. There is a common saying Tiger will give birth to Tiger only First it is Indira Gandhi, Then Rajiv Gandhi and now it is Rahul Gandhi. He is proving that he can be a able Prime minister, more better than Indira Gandhi & Rajiv Gandhi.
