Mangalore, Feb 11: It is common among girls, especially teenagers, to witness the craze for maintaining beautiful and long nails with methods like manicure, nail polish and nail art to name a few, definitely beauty being the reason. There are others, mostly men, who grow nails for setting records or as a challenge. But both the sex would definitely agree that growing and maintaining nails is challenge in itself.

In Mohan Acharya, a carpenter by profession, there is such an example, who has long left finger nails, the longest being nine centimetres. It has been a challenge for Mohan as his profession makes it difficult for him to grow nails. It requires a lot of skills as he is mostly involved in cutting and designing wood for which he needs to use sharp and heavy equipment such as hammers and files.

“When I decided to grow my nails, it was a challenge I took it on myself owing to my profession. Though in the beginning I damaged the nails a many times, after several attempts finally I mastered the skill of carpentry with long nails, he says with the glee.

Mohan, a resident of Sampila in Ira village of the taluk is from a family of carpenters. He long cherished to become a great wood carving artist, but he is now well known for his hobby of growing and maintaining long nails. “Most of my friends first laughed at me that I was only bothered about caring for my nails and not work. But soon I proved them wrong, he adds proudly.

Three fingers have nails of nine centimetres long and the others are about five to six centimeters. Mohan nurses no intention to add his name in any record books and does not like to exhibit them as an achievement. But sometimes I do feel proud of my achievements, he reveals adding that initially he had to face the wrath of his family.

The nails on his fingers are a special attraction for the people of his village and curious eyes are always following him when he sets for work. He says mostly people come to him to witness how he works despite long nails.

Sathish, Mohan’s friend says that the hobby has given him a special identity. He was disappointed every time he lost his nails while on work, but persevered and soon was adept at working with long nails. He has surmounted a challenge, he adds proudly.

Mohan has plans to grow his nails on the right hand as well, but is not sure whether he will manage. What is more interesting is that he does not take any special care to strengthen his nails. Moreover, his friends vouch for him saying that it is a healthy hobby and add that Mohan maintains clean nails for past six years with no history of illness so far.

To comment on others has become a habbit to most of us (Day begins with Criticism, whether in news paper or daily life). Dont have to call it dirty, ugly, freaky, unhygenic etc., You have your choice, but dont come in others way please. Some grow long hairs and some like boy-cut, and some color their hairs, some tattoo their body, some dress in a peculiar style. As far it does not harm others - leave it that way. Changes are aspects of life! What looks good to others may not look good for me/you or vice-versa. The law or nature differs from one human/house/country to other as well. Let us enjoy the way it is. Let us be positive

NOT A GOOD IDEA. Long Nails doesn't help in any way. It is a burden only.It may injure others or self by accidently. If he takes little time (instead of growing nails) to make good garden or teach youngsters the art of Carpentry, that will be appreciated by all.
