'Engine of Growth' : National Conference on SME at SDM College

Mangalore, Feb 16: The Post-graduate Centre for Management Studies and Research of the SDM College of Business Management here, will be organizing a national conference on ‘Small and Medium Enterprises: Engine of Growth’, on Saturday February 20 at the college premises.

The conference aims at focussing on providing insights on revamping of small and medium enterprise (SME) sector, which has of late, been severely affected by the global melt down. Strategies required to revitalize the SME sector as engine of growth to put India on fast track of recovery, are proposed to be unveiled and discussed in detail at the conference. The deliberations will also centre on strategies, modernization, prospects, challenges, promoting rural industrialization and other issues.

Susir Kumar, chief executive officer and managing director of Intelenet Global Services, Mumbai, will inaugurate the conference. The entrepreneurship development cell will be inaugurated by Dr T Prasad, faculty advisor (EDC) of NITIE, Mumbai, while the Industrial Consultancy Cell of the SDM Post Graduate Centre will be inaugurated by Gautham Ghate, managing director of Magnum Intergraphics Ltd, Bangalore.

At the technical session – I, scheduled to be held between 10.45 am and 12 pm that day on the subject, ‘Small and Medium Enterprises – between reality and ambition: issues and challenges’, resource persons, Dr Himanshu Kulkarni, advisor for MDP, Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune, and Dr Ananthapadmanabha Achar, reader, MIM, Manipal, will participate. The session will be chaired by Dr Mustiary Begum, professor and chairperson, department of business administration, Mangalore University.

Technical session – II, set to be held from 12 pm to 1.15 pm, will be on the topic of the ‘Role of Small and Medium Enterprises in Inclusive Growth’. Resource persons, Dr C Manohar, executive director and dean, IBMR International Business School, Bangalore, and Prof Leelavathi, department of economics, University of Mysore, will be present. Prof Aloysius Sequeira, department of humanities, social sciences and management, NITK, Suratkal, will be the chairperson for the session.

Session - III of the conference, to be held from 2 pm to 3.15 pm, will be on the topic of ‘Sustainable Innovations for the Growth of Small and Medium Enterprises Sector’. Latha Kini, an industrialist from the city, and Dr T Prasad, faculty advisor (EDC), NITIE, Mumbai, will be the resource persons for the session. Canara Small Industries Association president, K Jayaraj Pai, will chair the session.

This will be followed by paper presentation from 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm.

A session on ‘Development of Leadership and Management Skills’ will be held from 5 pm to 6 pm. This session will be presided over by B R Bhat, general manager, Corporation Bank. Dr G V Rao, advisor to UNESCO, Paris, will participate as resource person.

This will be followed by cultural programmes and dinner, informed programme coordinators, Dr Devaraj K, director, and organizing secretary, Savitha. Deepak Maroli, Prathiksha Kasturi Pai, Akshith Suvarna, Neethi Nithyananda and Sanketh Shetty are the student coordinators for the event.
