Mumbai, Feb 17: Ash Wednesday was observed in the metro by Christians on February 17.
The ashes marked in the shape of crucifixion on the foreheads of Christians by the clergy, will begin the Lenten season, the 40-day observation of fasting and penance, which would conclude on Good Friday April 2.
Konkani speaking natives of Mangalore and Goa settled in the metro thronged their respective parishes, to attend the special Holy Mass on Ash Wednesday. A large number of devotees attended the Holy Masses in various churches across the metro with a view of committing themselves to introspect on reformed living.
The joining in The Ways of the Cross by the faithful during the lent also rejuvenates the spirituality, as it gives an opportunity to ponder over the past and commit them for better spiritual living.
The Lenten season gives an opportunity for Christians to offer prayers, indulge in fasting and penance, in order to celebrate the feast of Resurrection of Jesus, Easter on Sunday April 4.
