Heavy rainfall forecast in North Bengal areas

Kolkata, Jun 29 (IANS): As many as seven north Bengal districts are likely to witness heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the next six days disrupting normal life, sources at the Alipur Met office said.

The worst-affected districts will be Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Malda and North Dinajpur, all in north Bengal.

Besides several north Bengal districts, heavy rainfall is also expected in a large part of south Bengal including Murshidabad, Birbhum, Purulia and two Burdwan districts.

Kolkata weather office officials said that Kolkata, twin town Howrah and its adjoining South 24-Parganas and North 24-Parganas will also witness moderate rain for the next few days.

Meanwhile, heavy spells of rain triggered landslides in Darjeeling district cutting off the main link road between Rimbik and Lodhama region in the hills. The incident took place on Sunday evening with a large part of the link road getting completely blocked due to the landslide. Police said no casualty was reported.

Sources said that the landslide damaged a newly constructed road stretch. The district administration has started repairing the damaged link road from Monday morning with the debris being cleared.
