Mangalore, Feb 18: Fishermen community in Kotepura area near Ullal here were in for a shock when they witnessed dead fishes on the water and sea shore as well as various others attempting to jump out of the sea in the morning of Thursday February 18. The phenomenon is spread about four to five kilometers along the shore.

Majority among the fish varieties that were found dead was Catfish. This is among the best fish sold in the market and in demand for its taste. The fishermen now suspect that sea water is polluted due to some poisonous substance that not only is harming the fishes, but also may become major threat to family dependent on fishing.

Venkatesh, a young fisherman said that finding dead fish on the sea shore though common, the death of fishes in such a large number is very rare and witnessed in the region for the first time at least in the past three decades, he adds.

Narayan, who is into fishing from past 30 years said that it is no miracle called ‘fish rain’ as termed largely by the locals, but suspects that the death has been caused due to poisonous contents in the sea water. The sea water is polluted as several factories along the shore are releasing the effluents into sea without proper treatment, he observed.

Fishermen community in general is now fearful that their future might be at stake if the Catfish variety of fish is harmed, which is the main source if income. The community further demanded the departments concerned to intervene to investigate and solve the problem as well as implement stringent action against industries responsible for sea pollution.

Neither the officials from the fisheries department nor the Pollution Control Board have visited the spot so far despite information passed on to them by the fishermen.

Could these pretty well fed cat fish be from a fresh/sweet water private pond, accidentaly found their way to sea/saline water which might have caused this mass suicide?

Hope Daijiworld will come up with an udated info.

This dying fish is a very sad adverse environmental condition persisting in the Mangalore area, due to discharge of dangerous chemicals, pesticides, pollutants and raw sewer into the waters. If this gets into the food chain, we can expect to see impacts on the unborn babies and children. Lack of environmental regulations is to be blamed for this adverse condition.

Our Engineering schools are producing electronic and computer engineers, and forgotten to produce environmental engineers, who can protect the environment ensuring appropriate regulations and permits would implemented. The engineering schools need to start environmental engineering programs so that India can protect the environment effectively. Let us stop exporting electronic and computer engineers for overseas market, instead let us produce engineers to protect our precious waters and lands.

    Its really a tragedy.
If you carefully watch the Pictures here, most of the fishes are Cat fish & it looks like shallow water Catfish (Bollyade in tulu). As per my knowledge, this Catfish (Bollyade) mainly eats human shit, dark mud, fish waste like Shrimp/Prawns peels (from the fish processing factory) or other fish waste from the factory. It always plays in shallow water near to shore. So, simple logic is some fish processing factory must have dumped the old stored fish waste with fctory cleaning chemicals like Phynile (or other brand), bleaching liquid etc normally uses in the fish factory for cleaning the floor. They must be having a waste storing under ground pitt or tanks which must have full, so night time they must have used the motor pump to connect to sea to clear the Waste Pitt. Coz, if you will carefully notice in one of the picture given here, you can see thick bubbles arround the fishes. So, I request the related Authorities or Departments should check the nearby Fish processing plants /factories to investigate the reason. Going thru the comments over here, if the sea water was poisonned then you would have seen also the other variety of dead fishes like White Mullet (Mala ) which always swallows & like to breath in the surface of the water. I am not a expert but this is my knowledge. Please don't make an issue about this comments.

This is a serious matter & directly effecting to us.
If it is proved ,then Proper action should be taken against those factories nearby shore polluting Sea water, which release polluted effluents directly into sea without proper treatment.
If the fisheries department or the Pollution Control Board unable to show any progress, then surely we should raise together to protest againt these happenings.

So sad to know the incident I have ever heard in my 4 decades of life. I am a fishy eater and fond of cat fish with no doubt. Proper investigation should be made in maintaining the normal life of people. I urge Mangalore rural and concerned to take an immediate action so that the cause may be stopped in time.
