Skill, reskill and upskill: PM's job mantra amid corona crisis

New Delhi, Jul 15 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the mantra to remain relevant during the coronavirus pandemic in the country is to 'skill, reskill and upskill'.

"Many ask me that in today's fast-changing business and market, they do not understand how to remain relevant. In this time of corona, this question has become even more pertinent. I give only one answer: The only mantra to stay relevant is skill, reskill and upskill," he said in a video message.

His message came on the occasion of 'World Youth Skills Day', which also marks the 5th anniversary of the launch of 'Skill India Mission', a pet project of the Prime Minister that was launched to make India's youths job-ready.

Making a strong pitch for Indians to be more skilled and connecting it to self- reliance, the Prime Minister asserted: "Skill is unique -- it makes you different from others. It's a treasure nobody can take away. It's self-reliance that not only makes one employable, but self-employable."

Modi said that over 5 crore people have been skilled in the last five years.

Stressing the need for skilling to address the concern on jobs, Modi said: "Millions of skilled people are needed in several sectors in today's burgeoning businesses, especially in the health sector."

"This corona crisis has changed the nature of jobs, along with the world culture. The ever-changing technology has also created an impact on it."

However, the Prime Minister cautioned, knowledge is different from skill.

"A lot of people are confused about knowledge and skill. Such people can read or watch how to ride a bicycle in books or videos -- this is knowledge. But actually riding a bicycle is a skill. Knowledge may help, but skill is the actual ability to do things," he explained.

He added that if the gap between knowledge and skill is bridged, entrepreneurship is encouraged, which has been the goal of his government.

Skill India's jobless growth remains a myth, not possible for India to grow at 7.3% with decelerating labour. The loud proponents of jobless growth are doing their bit to ensure we don’t ask the right questions about the Indian economy.

The vision was great but six years later, India is living a jobs nightmare as unemployment is at a 45-year high. Lockdown to curb the spread of coronavirus has seen 122 million Indians lose their jobs in April alone. Unemployment hit 23.5% in April, a sharp spike from 8.7% in March. Of the 122 million who have lost their jobs, 91.3 millions were small traders and labourers. But a fairly significant number of salaried workers - 17.8 million - and self-employed people - 18.2 million - have also lost work.

As more Indian's are killed by 'Covid-19', our Prime Minister comes out with one new acronym every week. But result remains the worst.

will this mantra work for poor people - laborers, housemaids, civic cleaners, class 4 servants? what they have to do to "skill, reskill and upskill" to beat the situation brought about by this covid crisis? can they provide their services digitally? or labourers / housemaids should learn programming online and start working from home for IT companies? who will finance them for "upskill/reskill" and until they get new jobs?

Skill is not riding a bicycle..
Skill is knowing the models, prices, mechanisms, parts , service centres, self help and DIY..
    That's skill..
Riding is physical work which does not require skills, only courage & confidence..

Sir, The hard working Prime Minister of India in 2018 in both parliament session has only attended 18 hours. He works only hard during election rallies which can he deliver tirelessly without taking any break.

He is hardly working and more interest in 'Mann ki baat' and runs away from press conference comparing to former Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh.
