Mangaluru, Jul 16: Coastal districts of Karnataka have been experiencing intensified monsoon since the last four days. The rainfall has been particularly heavy since Wednesday July 15 and it is continuing on Thursday too. Almost all the areas in the coast have received good rains.

After the monsoon set foot in the coastal belt on June 4, the monsoon winds had lost steam and the coast had bathed in cloudy climate with sunny weather in between for several days. Since the last four days, the rainfall has picked up and water is found standing in low lying areas.

With rain, vehicular movement has become slower and heavy traffic was witnessed on Wednesday in certain pockets. Road repair works, underground drainage, and water pipeline works which are being conducted in various areas in the city like Kudroli, K S Rao Road, Kottara, Hamlpankatta etc are impeding the smooth flow of traffic.

The protective wall built to stop sea erosion has been crumbling in Koyippady, Kumble. Many have blamed unscientific works for this situation.

The meteorological department has sounded yellow alert in coastal Karnataka from July 16 to 19 signifying heavy rainfall. The sea is likely to become tumultuous, and maximum temperature in the city has come down to 27 degree Celsius. However, the total rainfall in Dakshina Kannada district has registered less than average with about 30 percent shortfall in all the taluks.
