Bengaluru: KSRTC employees look to other avenues for a living

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Jul 21: A number of employees of road transport corporations here and their family members have now started to earn a living by being street vendors out of compulsion. They now sell vegetables by using pushcarts.

Because of lockdown and fear of coronavirus, all the four road transport corporations are facing a financial crisis. The employees who are working in spite of the fear of coronavirus gripping them, have not been getting their salaries properly for the last three months.

The state government had bailed out the corporations by releasing financial aid towards salaries of April and May. But salaries for June have not been paid till now as the corporations have no money. Therefore, the employees of these corporations have adopted the sale of vegetables through pushcarts as a means of earning something.

A BMTC conductor said he has been selling onions from morning to evening and earning Rs 300 to 400 a day. He revealed that several of his colleagues are also doing the same thing. Another BMTC worker said that his friend brings fish from Kanakapura and he supplies the same to shops in the city and earns between Rs 250 to 300 a day.

During Congress ruling Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy stated that for the first time in the history of the KSRTC, a gross profit of Rs 114.95 crores was reported in 2015-2016. The KSRTC was able to reduce its loan liabilities of Rs 314.73 crores to Rs 153.51 crores.

During Congress ruling in last term KSRTC has become a pioneer in adopting 'IT solutions' in many of its functional and operational areas. These initiatives have brought efficiency, transparency, uniformity, quality, accuracy, regularity and operational excellence in the administration and service delivery.

The IT initiatives have been replicated in many other state transport undertakings across the country and they have been recognized by several National and International awards.

Initiatives include electronic ticketing, touch screen ticketing machines, local language interfaces, biometric authentications and alerts to passengers before pick ups or drops. In the administrative sections, solutions include a duty rota and leave management system that is scientifically designed based on functional level requirements.

The KSTRC's free WiFi facility at 24 important bus stations have been availed by 35 lakh passengers. CCTV facilities have been installed at depot/Divisional workshops of the KSRTC and also at 90 bus stations at a cost of Rs 14.95 crore to ensure the safety of passengers especially women travelers & the properties of the KSRTC.

During important events and festivals. Private players' tickets may cost over 40% more in such times, but the KSRTC will not do that. And as the cash flow indicates, Karnataka's passengers are more than happy with their govt. transport corporation - certainly a rare feat in India.

But under BJP's Operantion Kamala govt. even employees salaries became hardship. The company which use to make Rs150 crores profit a year before now become bankrupt now ready to be sold to like Air India, BSNL, MTNL and so on.

See the fate of these producers:

Pune (Maharashtra), Jul 21 (IANS): Hundreds of farmers on Tuesday emptied tankers and cans containing thousands of litres of milk on the streets in Sangli, Kolhapur, Jalna, Hingoli, Solapur and Pune demanding an increase in milk procurement prices.

Hundreds of activists led by Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana (SSS) President Raju Shetti took to the streets all over the state, especially in some of the key milk-producing regions of western Maharashtra, and stopped milk tankers and milk tempos transporting milk to towns and cities.

"The rural economy has been hit hard by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. The dairy industry is a key supportive sector in the rural economy, providing livelihood to lakhs of farmers. But due to the lockdowns, milk consumption is down by over 40 per cent and milk is being converted to butter or skimmed milk powder," Shetti told IANS.

Due to the increasing production of butter and milk powder, the stocks are increasing and the prices are further dropping and have currently reached Rs 220 and Rs 280, respectively, he said.

With growing stocks of butter and milk powder, the dairy owners are not ready to accept raw milk from the farmers and consequently they get barely Rs 18-20 per litre, resulting in a crisis in the dairy sector, Shetti explained.

Covid19 pandemic is not going anywhere too soon !!! Those individuals who have agricultural land, must use this opportunity to cultivate crops, which will definitely provide them a good source of income.... In Mumbai most of the migrants have fled to their villages, many may not return, due to rampant explosion of this pandemic in cities !!!!

For next few years people who have agricultural land for growing food and vegetables will be less stressed. People who have settled down in cities and no work to do will suffer most.

Selling fruits and vegetables is indeed a good business. I realised it after visiting the Bikampady APMC market. Price difference at Bikampady and local markets such as Kankanady and Mallikatte is almost 300%. It's not surprising that the farmers remain so poor. Retailers pocket huge profits.

Govt has no money to pay employees salaries then how it has money to buy medical equipments with higher price?????....... I have one word to describe this govt 'INCOMPETANT'. Reason being no planning, no strategy and no governance. They should have enough money allocated to look after people during this emergency periods. How can we rely and trust this govt in future calamities and misfortunes?????....All countries of the world are fully meeting people's needs mostly the developed and developing nations. They have utterly and miserably failed in this litmus test and there is no signs of any recovery or solution except never ending verbal pacifications and consolations. At this time NYAY would have been an ideal solution to meet all challenges. Congress would have handled this pandemic in a better way for sure.
