Mangaluru: Rain fury continues - Woman dies, vehicular traffic obstructed

Mangaluru, Aug 6: Rainfall intensified all across the coast of Karnataka on Wednesday August 5. The rain has inflicted losses at several places. Many rural roads have been either damaged or submerged, making it difficult to use these roads.

Gulabi (60) from Ambagilu Puttur village in Udupi accidentally slipped when walking on Nittur-Hanumantha Nagar road, fell into the storm drain that was overflowing, and lost her life.

Over 84 electric poles got uprooted in the twin districts. Due to heavy rain, minor bridge at Kalbettu in Didupe, Malavanthige village in Betnagady has been facing danger. This bridge has become unusable now. As many as 13 houses in Bantwal were damaged. Water level in River Netravati has risen, and Kumaradhara bathing bay in Subrahmanya has been inundated. Plantations and other vegetation in many places suffered losses due to heavy rain and wind.

Chief minister B S Yediyurappa called Udupi deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha, on Wednesday evening over phone and got information about the situation. Revenue minister R Ashok, called Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Dr K V Rajendra and gathered information about the measures taken to handle the situation.

Kottigehara in Chikkamagaluru district received the highest rainfall of 31 cm in the state with Madikeri recording 23 cm. Hosanagara and Agumbe received over 20 cm rainfall. Many places in Malnad received between 10 and 20 cm rainfall.

The meteorological department expects heavy rain in the coast in a prediction that is valid till Friday morning. Rain has also been forecast in almost the entire southern interior Karnataka and several places in the north interior parts of the state. The state's coast has been issued with red alert on August 6 and orange alert for August 7 and 8. For August 9 and 10 again, a red alert has been sounded.

    One must understand that these are natural calamities continued from years and people used to it. But our politicians are taking maximum benefits out of it rather have a solid plans to how to face it. Again that releasing of FUNDS to that floods and rest of the story all you know it.
