Mangaluru: '#EducationInTulu' campaign trending now in coastal Karnataka

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Aug 17: Tulu has been the mother tongue of lacs of people. This language however, has not been able to win the recognition and status it deserves. The Tuluvas have now shown a strong inclination to carry out a strong campaign to insist that the children from Tulunadu get education in Tulu language.

'Jai Tulunad' organisation, which already is backed by the experience of having organised several programmes for the sake of Tulu language and culture, has taken the lead in spearheading the campaign. The organisation has already started to create awareness about this issue among the people. Demanding to include Tulu, in the new National Education Policy (NEP), the organization started a Tweet Tulunad campaign with a Hashtag Education in Tulu (#EducationInTulu).

This organisation had in the past led large scale programmes demanding to include Tulu language in the eighth schedule of the Indian Constitution. It also had pursued demand to make Tulu an official state language in Karnataka and Kerala. It also had initiated a programme to teach Tulu script to the people on a large scale. Its programmes have become popular among the people.

The union government plans to introduce the new education polices once it is able to get over the coronavirus pandemic. As per the new education policy, children up to the fifth standard have to be taught in regional languages. The people of coastal Karnataka therefore wish that the children from here are taught in Tulu language by introducing a regulation to that affect.

India has two levels of language, national level (Hindi and English) at National level...

State level... official language of state...

Some states have second official language, if that model is adopted, Kodava, Tulu and Beary languages can be second official languages...

There is no provision for district level official language...

As per NEP 2020, we should demand for Tulu language inclusion in academics as second language, instead of Hindi. Kannada is very much required for we Tuluvas. Even if separate state is formed (i dont support this idea), we will be dependent on Karnataka and we will have to learn Kannada, because Tulunadu will be very negligible by geography and we will have to depend on Karnataka for trade, commerce, education, jobs etc. Example : See how Puduchery is dependent on TN and Goa on MH.

With small geographical area we can't create economy hubs like Bangalore and Mumbai. Even if we create such city, we will lose out Tulu language to migrants. And think Tulu will be more danger then. See the plight of Kannada in Bangalore.

Can we teach science and medicine in tulu?
Why should we confuse our children about language?
My heart pains when this kind of chuvanism is raked up in the name of regionalism and language. I hope better sense prevails and saves our country.

Cultural chauvinism is being practiced by your Bangalore Govt. Ask them why they have imposed their language on us.

Tulu is a beautiful language but it’s utility outside mangalore is almost non existent. I understand the need to learn science and math in native language, in that case Hindi seems to be a better option. There are just not enough speakers of Tulu.

In all languages learning ' expletives ' first is a must !
In Tulu all expletives too are lyrical, meaningful, forceful but definitely ' not music to the ears' to the one who knows the language very well !

Tulu is our language, it is the language of our mind, we think in Tulu and the mind translates it to other languages we speak
If somebody replies me in Kannada or Malayalam in Kudla, it's pricking

Tulunad is the only place where outside language takes prominence. In Tamilnadu it's Tamil, Maharashtra - Marati, Kerala- Malyalam, so on and so forth. Why is it not Tulu in Tulunad? Why is kannad which is not our language be the official language? We need to fight for a separate Tulunad State and Tulu language. Kannad which is not our language should be treated same as other languages such as Tamil, telugu malyalam etc.

Even in Kodagu, Kodava language has not gained prominence over Kannada. Pre Independence, Kodagu was a separate kingdom not under Mysore. Kannada should not be forced upon non native speakers.
