Mangalore, Mar 21: Defending the move of bringing in anti cow slaughter law, Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa termed it as an historical move.
Addressing presspersons at the Circuit House on Sunday March 21, Yeddyurappa in the government’s defense said that cow slaughter was the practice introduced by the British to divide people in the name of the religion. A peek into the history also shows that during Akbar’s rule the cow slaughter was banned, he said.
Congress leaders Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru apart from Vinobha Bhave and B R Ambedkar too supported the ban. It is ironical that Congress is now opposing the ban, he said. Gujarat, Madhyapradesh, Rajasthan, Chandigarh and Jammu and Kashmir have already banned the cow slaughter, he said and observed that though the centre has banned lottery, arrack and not cow slaughter.
CM said that there would be an increased need for grazing land to support the likely growth in the cattle population once the law is enforced.
As a step to increase the power capacity in the state, CM said that the state has already purchased 1,000 mw power. The state further plans to produce 5,000 mw power.
Elaborating on the development works in the district, CM said that Rs 100 crore fund has been made available to Mangalore City Corporation for development works. On the district sub jail, Yeddyurappa said that the jail will be shifted soon and the works will be suspended at the earliest. The government is surveying the land for sub jail and the existing will be converted into complex or the like, he said.
He stressed that there is a need to protect farmers’ interest as the country is based on agriculture and announced that arecanut growers will get support price of Rs 75. The government has already provided Rs 5 crore for Campco to enable purchase of arecanut from growers. If needed arises a crore more will be made available, he said. A committee will soon send a report to central government with details on arecanut growers’ problems and its production.
CM was here on Saturday and Sunday to participate in Shriramanama Taraka Yajna at Kalladka near Bantwal.
