Mangaluru, Aug 19: MLA U T Khader urged the government to withdraw the order regarding the closure of central market in order to control coronavirus pandemic.

Addressing media here on Wednesday August 19, Khader said, "The government should also come up with an alternative for the traders instead of issuing orders of shifting overnight. On April 4, an order was issued overnight to shift wholesale vegetable and fruits traders to APMC at Baikampady. Due to heavy rain, it was difficult for traders to conduct business at APMC yard. Later the city corporation withdrew the case and retailers occupied the central market on August 13.

“It is unfortunate that we have officials who issue orders by listening to some political masters. If the government was concerned about corona pandemic, they should have conducted corona tests of the traders at central market and fish dealers at Bunder. Today, APMC president has urged the traders to come back to APMC yard for their business. When APMC Act was abolished, why were they silent?

“Irregularities are taking place at APMC as they are providing licence to everyone. In-charge secretary Ponnuraj should investigate this issue. Government should withdraw the orders regarding the closure of central market, have a discussion on it and come up with an alternative solution.

“Is this way to run the administration? There are experienced mayors here. The MP should call an all-party meeting and resolve this issue,” he said.

District Youth Congress president Mithun Rai, former mayor Harinath, Shashidhar Hegde and others were present.

    Suggestion:

Till the central market is reconfigured to be used in line with the covid-19 protocol, a ground right in the city at yemmekare (Bolar) can be used for vendors to sell fruits and vegetables temporarily. The ground is a site for a proposed swimming pool under city corporation.

I would suggest that 4 -8 strong RCC pillars be construed around central market and then a RCC roof above G+1, then let the new market be construed on top of the pillars, let it take it's time to construct, until then the traders can continue their business in the old structure which can be refurbished.Once the new structure is complete, the traders can shift to the new structure on top and then the old market can be demolished and 2 floors of parking area can be made in its place.Saanp bhi Na mare, laathi bhi na tute!!

    People,

People of Mangalore City cannot travel to Baikampady to buy retail vegetables....its too much travel for buyers of small quantities of vegetables...

Its also true Central Market is in very poor state...and no doubt it should be renovated ASAP...

Better renovate the market very quickly and temporarily shift Central market to near by place...so people don't have travel long for buying small items...

After this is done...Retail market could continue at Central market and Wholesale market at APMC Baikampady...

When Chinese can build a Thermal Power Plant / like one in Nandikoor in 6 weeks....why cant we renovate Central Market in 6 weeks???...If we keep Corruption and Politics out of this we can do it...

    ...Tak...Takk...

There are small grocery stores in every corner of the city. For day today vegetable purchase, let the people depend on them, thereby helping the grocery store owners who are really stuck hard by the supermarkets.
