Udupi: Suggi Mari Puja at Mariyamma Temples held

Udupi, Mar 25: Thousands of devotees from across undivided Dakshina Kannada district attended Suggi Mari Puja, held in the temples, dedicated to Goddess Devi, at Kaup, near here on Tuesday March 23 and Wednesday March 24.
Goddess Devi is being worshiped at Halemariamma temple, Hosamariamma temple and Marigudi, all located under the limits of Kaup, near here, wherein annual Mari Puja, shunning of evil and seeking divine graces for well-being is held, during the two days of worship and night vigil by a multitude of devotees.
Mari Puja is being held thrice in the year, during the Tulu calendar of Suggi, Aati and Jarde months at the temples dedicated to Goddess Devi at Kaup. The Mari Puja of Suggi has much significance.
The idol of Goddess Devi carved out of wood was carried in palanquin in the procession and installed at the temple on Tuesday. The same idol was discharged in a well, located near Mallar, here on Wednesday evening.
All sections of the society actively took part in annual Mari Puja, with provision of offering puja to Goddess Devi by themselves. Although, each temple has separate managing committee, all the three temple committees co-ordinate annual Mari Puja, as per the tradition handed down from many generations.
The devotees from as far as Malnad regions, Kasargod, Bangalore and Mumbai apart from coastal districts arrive to witness the annual Mari Puja. The devotees also visit Sri Laxmi Janardhan temple, located at the neighbourhood of Kaup, to seek the graces of Mahamayee.
