Aligarh, Aug 31 (IANS): The fraternity at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) mourned the passing away of former President Pranab Mukherjee, one of the most admired political leaders in the country. He died on Monday at the age of 84 at a New Delhi hospital.
"AMU community is deeply saddened with the news of Shri Pranab Mukherjee's demise. He was an elder statesman, who will be remembered for his exemplary services to the Nation," said AMU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor.
He added: "Our sincere condolences are with his family and followers during this difficult time."
"I had personal relations with Shri Pranab Mukherjee and this is a huge loss for me at the personal level," said the Vice-Chancellor.
Mukherjee made at least three visits to the AMU. His last visit was during the bicentennial birth celebrations of AMU founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan on October 17, 2017, when he delivered the commemoration address as the chief guest at the university's Athletics Ground.
Earlier, he visited AMU as the Union Finance Minister and once attended a Social Science Congress at the University.
